This Sunday will mark the first Sunday in Advent, which symbolises Hope with the “Prophet’s Candle” reminding us that Jesus is coming. In Year 5 we have been learning about Advent and have begun thinking about the special Advent promises they will make to prepare themselves for the Nativity of Christ at Christmas.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have been identifying the features of a good exploration narrative in preparation for writing their own. The children have highlighted the features of a model text and have been experimenting using these features for themselves - modal verbs, fronted adverbials and using a dash to add an additional clause.

In Maths the children have used their understanding of numbers and number patterns to recognise and complete sequences. They have developed their ability to find the rule to a given number sequence.

In RE the children have learnt about the covenant made between God and Abraham.

In Science the children have investigated how the shape of objects are affected by the effects of water resistance.

In PE the children have developed their space-themed dance.

In music the children have listened and appraised the song Cotton Tail, which is a 1940 composition by Duke Ellington and is based on George Gershwin's song I Got Rhythm. The children then practised playing the Three Note Bossa on the glockenspiel.

In Spanish the children have been learning the names of vegetables and have practised their pronunciation.

In Bounce Forward (our PSHE programme) this week, we discussed tough times that people go through and the resilient things we can do to help us get through them. Some of the children chose to share their own personal stories and I really was impressed with their openess and honesty. We talked about how important it is to talk to someone we trust and share how we feel when we’re going through a tough time, as a problem shared is a problem halved.

Advent liturgies

Throughout Advent we would like to invite all children and families to join us in the school hall for a short Advent liturgy led by Father Frank.

This will be held every Tuesday morning at 8:20am and will begin from Tuesday 29th November, continuing until Tuesday 20th December 2022.

We do hope you can join us for this opportunity to gather as a faith community to reflect on the true value and meaning of Advent.

Together, we can make a difference

Thank you all so much for supporting our Children In Need collection today. The children enjoyed being in their own clothes and it has given us the chance to talk to the children about all the wonderful work the charity does to support young people.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have put themselves in the astronauts moon boots and have been describing how the astronauts must have felt and what they thought. They have also been exploring new vocabulary and have creatively described the moon in contrast to the Earth to create a contrast poem.

In Maths the focus has been developing their ability to count forwards and backwards in steps of 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000.

In RE the children have learnt about the covenant made between God and Noah and have reflected on our part in the covenant.

In Science the children have identified the effects of air resistance through an experiment comparing the effectiveness of parachutes.

In PE the children have continued to work on group dance steps to a space theme.

In art the children have worked in the negative using graphite sticks to create a portrait in the style of Frank Auerbach.

In music the children have listened and appraised the bossa nova song, 'Desafinado' (a Portuguese word that means out of tune), composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The children have then performed the Three Note Bossa, by Ian Gray, on the glockenspiel.

Swimmers in groups 1 to 3 - life saving lessons

Those children who are in groups 1-3 (NOT group 4) in our swimming lessons on Tuesday, will need to bring in extra clothing to do some life saving training in the water next week. The swimming instructor has asked that they bring in a long sleeved top and long pyjama style bottoms - light weight tracksuit bottoms or leggings can be worn but nothing too heavy. I will send a text message home to those children who are in these groups.

"Lest we forget" Remembrance day

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice – an agreement to end the First World War. Yesterday, Year 5 spent time thinking about all those people in the armed forces who have sacrificed so much to protect their country and we made our own poppies and wrote a prayer of remembrance. This morning, like the rest of the country, we joined the whole school, and our Reception buddies, to hold one minutes silence as a sign of respect.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have continued to work with the lunar landing transcript and have written their own short narrative about it, describing what the astronauts did and said. We’ve also been looking at the words that show tense in writing and have changed paragraphs, from the book we are reading, from present tense into past tense.

In Maths the focus has been working with negative numbers.

In RE the children have reflected on the words of St. Teresa of Avila who said, “Jesus has no body now on Earth but yours.” They also looked into the work of St. Martin de Porres and have thought about how he followed Jesus in order to turn away from sin. The children reflected on what they can learn from him .

In Science we have been identifying forces that act upon objects.

In PE the children have worked well to come up with dance steps, individually and as part of a small group, to a space theme .

In art the children have worked in the negative using graphite sticks and using a rubber to erase the marks and pictures they wish to create.

Our learning this week…

In English we have begun a new unit of work which will come from the book, Where We Once Stood, which details first-hand accounts of the six moon landings. This week we have explored new vocabulary and phrases from the opening extracts of the book and have looked at strategies to help us with the meanings of these words. We’ve also discussed whether or not humans should return to the moon and the children have backed up their views by giving reasons and justifying their thoughts. The children then turned 1969 lunar landing transcript into punctuated speech.

In Maths the focus has been on ordering and comparing numbers to one million and rounding up to the nearest 100,000.

In RE the children have reflected on God’s message to look after our beautiful world and they have been thinking about how they can be good Stewards of Creation. Laudato Si' is an encyclical (open letter) written by Pope Francis, which was published in 2015. Pope Francis addressed this encyclical to every person on the planet, asking us all to protect the earth, "Live wisely, think deeply, love generously" . The children wrote a letter back to Pope Francis reflecting on how they could play their part in protecting our common home.

In PE the children began a new unit of work on dance and the children worked in pairs and small group to come up with sequenced steps.

In art the children have used pastels and chalks on black paper to create Space pictures of planets.

Swimmers in group 4 - life saving lessons

Year 5 achievements

I can’t believe we’re already at half term, the last seven weeks seems to have flown by! The children have been working hard over this half term and it’s been lovely getting to know them. They’ve particularly enjoyed their new leadership responsibilities of Buddies to Reception and Play leaders to KS1.

Today we had our Harvest festival and we came together as a whole school to celebrate this. Thank you once again for your generous contributions to our Harvest collection, it’s' very much appreciated. The tins of food (over 400 tins) will be going to a local food bank for people within the community, which I’m sure you’ll agree is a worthy cause. Thank you for your support!

Our learning this week…

In English the children have built on their story plans and have written their own episode in the style of Jeremy Strong.

In Maths the focus has been on placing numbers on number lines of different scales up to one million.

In Science we have used and created mnemonics to help us remember the order of the planets in our solar system and have identified how they move in relation to the sun.

In geography we continued to use absolute location by reading the lines of latitude and longitude on maps. The children identified countries on World maps using lines of latitude and longitude.

In PE the children had their last session working on developing their leadership skills and have continued to work on adapting games that they can lead when playing with their buddies and KS1.

Be the best role model you can be!

This week the children were involved in Reception’s Welcome assembly. They accompanied their buddies to assembly and helped present their very special Our Lady medals. Some of our Year 5’s read a prayer based around our school wish for them to live life to the full. Year 5’s were so mature and it’s so lovely to see the wonderful friendships that they have developed. In addition to this, Year 5 made a good start in their lunch time play leader role on the KS1 playground during lunch time.

Our learning this week…

In English we have looked at how a story grows through three stages of development and have evaluated a model for their own writing. The children have planned their own writing with this in mind.

In our Tales Retold workshop the children continued to work on their characterisation.

In Maths the focus has been on numbers to one million and representing number in different ways.

In geography we’ve been learning about absolute location by reading the lines of latitude and longitude on maps. The children all did really well and were able to identify places on maps of Europe and the UK using lines of latitude and longitude.

In Spanish the children were introduced to the Spanish alphabet and learning the phonetic sounds of some of the letters.

In PE the children have continued to work on developing their leadership skills and have been working and adapting games that they can lead when playing with their buddies and KS1.

In art the children have continued to work on their enlarged sketches based on the work of Hundertwasser.

Our week...

Yesterday we had our first class mass at church with Father Frank. Well done to the children who read in church, they read so beautifully and clearly. The class behaved so well and so respectfully we were so pleased for them.

Our learning this week…

In English we have discussed how the role of the narrator is the ‘voice’ of the story and can show strong likes and dislikes about the characters. We have compared the characters and identified language that shows the narrator’s point of view of the characters.

In our Tales Retold workshop this week, the children worked on developing their favourite characters and then they got into role and hot seated. We were really impressed with how well the children maintained their character roles and answered questions from the character’s point of view.

In Maths the children have rounded numbers to 100,000 and have read and written Roman numerals using M, D, C, L, X, V and I and they have learnt to recognise and represent a year written in Roman numerals.

In geography the children have created an itinerary for a group of travellers travelling through North and South America with different interests. The children had to choose places across America that matched their interests and identify them on a map.

In computing the children have learnt about all the Mars Rovers that NASA has sent to Mars and they learnt that the more RAM (Random access memory) the robot has, the more instructions that it can have in a row. The children then played a game that stimulates programming a Mars Rover.

In PE the children have continued to develop their leadership skills by learning how to adapt their games for children with additional needs. The children learnt to play a game of Goal Ball that involves playing sat on the floor blindfolded, or in our case with eyes closed, and a ball with a bell so they are encouraged to listen for the ball.

In music the children listened to “Rockin’ All Over The World” by Status Quo and have compared it to “Livin’ on a prayer”. The children have identified the style indicators of Rock music and have accompanied the music by playing glockenspiels.

In art the children have continued to work on their enlarged sketches based on the work of Hundertwasser.

Year 5 have continued to develop their leadership skills this week through their PE lesson and through their Change for Life workshop. Through both sessions the children have got into their new play leader groups and have begun working as a team to come up with games that they can deliver to their buddies and to KS1 when they begin their role next week. In both sessions the children were challenged to communicate effectively and to lead other children through the games. The games the children came up with were really creative and we were particularly impressed with how well the teams worked together, gave positive feedback and made good suggestions for how to improve the games. Next week the children will begin their play leader role and will be given a duty once a week during lunch times.

On Wednesday the children were treated to an afternoon of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night performed by The Royal Shakespeare Company and some of our Year 6. Last week we had spent some time exploring the play and so Year 5 were really excited to watch the performance and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Reading challenge…

This week I have set the children a reading challenge. We are going to try and increase the amount we are reading as this is such an important part of the children’s learning and just as Doctor Seuss says, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Please can I ask that parents encourage the children to read at home and sign their reading diary. I’ve noticed that quite a few children are not reading as regularly as they should and some children rarely bring their reading diaries to school. This is such a shame and it will have an impact on their quiz scores in school and the progress they are making. The children should be reading for at least 20 minutes a day at home. To improve this, we will continue to check reading diaries daily and in addition to the house points and the Golden tickets they usually receive for reading and taking quizzes, they will receive daily bonus points. By earning house points for reading, this will support the children in getting a minimum of 50 house points each week in order to be included in our weekly prize draw on a Friday and will increase the number of Golden tickets they receive. (The Golden ticket draw will take place at the end of half term when we celebrate our reading champions.) Get reading Year 5! 📚

Our learning this week…

In English Year 5 have used drama to act out the different episodes of Jeremy Strong’s story “This is NOT a fairy tale” and have written the episode using dialogue.

In Tales Retold the children worked in groups to freeze frame scenes from a chosen book where the characters were really challenged. They then reframed the scene after the character made a resilient move and they overcame the challenging time.

In Maths the children have rounded, compared and ordered numbers to 100,000.

In RE the children have considered the two different viewpoints of the creation story (scientific and theological) and have talked about how the scientific explanation does not contradict religion.

In Science the children have described the movement of the Earth relative to the Sun and have learnt that the tilt of the Earth is the reason for our seasons.

In music the children listened to “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple and have compared it to “Livin’ on a prayer”. The children have found the pulse and rhythm of the songs.

In art the children chose one of their sketches based on the work of Hundertwasser and have enlarged it.

Our week...

Year 5 have had another lovely week and have continued to work hard. It’s been lovely to get to know your children and see their strengths shining through. As you know, last week the children officially met their Reception Buddies. Miss Heim-Sarac was so impressed with the children last week so this afternoon we all went down to Reception so that they could spend some time together and then accompany their Buddies to their very first assembly. We’re so proud of the children and in assembly the children all received their Buddy badges. Well done Year 5!

Our learning this week…

In English Year 5 have explored Shakespeare’s play “Twelfth Night” in preparation for next week’s visit from the RSC who will be performing the play in our school hall. The children have immersed into the story, the households and the characters through freeze frames and drama.

In Maths the children have applied their understanding of the place value of numbers up to 100,000 to represent and partition them in different ways work. They have also been using number lines to 100,000 and identified numbers that are between two points (for example multiples of 10,000), using mathematical language to describe the position.

In RE the children have discussed the Scientific view of how the World began and also listened to the Creation story from Genesis 1 (Theological view) and have made their own Creation wheel as a reminder of the story.

This week in our space topic in Science, the children have been looking at how the rotation of the Earth allows us to have day and night. Ask your child to explain it to you, to see how much they’ve remembered.

In music the children listened to “We will rock you” by Queen and have compared it to “Livin’ on a prayer”. The children have been learning to find the pulse and playing games to develop understanding of rhythm and pitch.

In PE this week, Year 5 began their Buddies Leadership programme delivered by Erin, who worked with the children last year in PE. The aim of the programme is to support the children in developing their leadership skills so that they can work as a small team to deliver lunch time activities to their Reception Buddies and to KS1 children. This week the children worked together in small groups as a team to play a ball game and came up with their own rules.

Next week…

Unfortunately, Thursday’s Leadership workshop this week had to be cancelled due to the rain, but will now take place next Thursday instead. Therefore, the children will now need to wear their PE kits Monday through to Thursday next week. (Monday will be our other Leadership workshop, Tuesday is swimming, Wednesday PE and Thursday’s Leadership workshop - it’s going to be a busy week!)

This week Year 5 were really excited to meet their Reception buddies. They gave them a special welcome letter and a wooden heart with their name on to introduce themselves. Year 5 will be developing their leadership roles this year and as part this, they will not only be role models to their buddies to Reception but also play leaders to KS1. Over the coming weeks, Year 5 will receive training in leadership from Blackpool Football Club Community Trust during their Wednesday PE lesson and also a couple of leadership workshops including refereeing. The first of these other sessions will be on Thursday and the children will need to wear their PE kit.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have been learning to use parenthesis marked by commas, brackets or dashes.

In Maths the focus has been on place value and the children have been reading and writing 5-digit numbers and recognising the value of each digit.

In RE we have been discussing how the world began and have compared their own views against those of their learning partner.

In Computing the children learnt all about Binary coding that computers use to communicate with each other. The children found out that the Curiosity Mars Rover communicated back and forth with Nasa using this code. They have learnt how to read binary up to eight characters and understand that each one or zero is referred to as a bit. They then played a game on the computer where they needed to calculate binary numbers, knowing each digit is worth double the one that precedes it. It’s quite a challenging concept so I was really impressed with how quickly they understood this and they managed some really high scores.

Our geography unit this half term is about lines of latitude and longitude. We have started looking at the significance of these lines and the children have started to identify some of these on a World map: the Equator, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the Arctic and Antarctic circles and the Prime Meridian

In music the children were learning to recognise the basic style indicators of the Classic Rock song ‘Livin’ On A Prayer by Bon Jovi’.

In our art lesson the children have continued to explore and draw sections of Hundertwasser’s images into their sketchbooks.

Our week in Year 5...

What a great week we’ve had! Year 5 have made a great start to this year and it has been lovely to spend time getting to know them a little better. We’ve been impressed with how quickly they have settled into the new routines and we are excited to be working with them this year.

Your child will have come home with their reading book (with a new ZPD) and diary. Bookmarks and diaries will be checked daily so please encourage your child to read regularly and they must have their book and diary in every day. Your child’s new water bottle  will also come home with them each evening to ensure that it can be washed and filled ready for the next day. Unfortunately we don’t have spares in school, or cups they can use, so it is important that they bring it in each day. Please also ensure your child brings a coat each day just in case the weather changes over the course of the day - we will still want to get outside for some fresh air even if it is a bit cold or just a bit of rain. 

On Tuesday the children began their swimming sessions and we were delighted with the way they conducted themselves and represented our school. They made a fabulous start to their lessons and this enabled their swimming teachers to get them sorted into swimming groups quickly and begin working on their new swimming techniques. Well done Year 5!

On Thursday the whole school went across to Church to take part in mass to celebrate "The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. Again I am so proud of the behaviour of the children - they all showed great reverence, listened well and took part in the responses.

Our learning this week…

This year, Year 5 will continue working with the Knotted project and the Grand Theatre on the Tales Retold resilience and storytelling project. On Monday, the children had their first session working with Natalie and Helen, who worked with the children in Year 4. It was lovely to see the children’s enthusiasm for the workshop and I was impressed with how engaged the children were in the activities.

In English we have begun looking at stories by the author Jeremy Strong. This week the children have read “This is not a fairy tale” and they have begun identifying the key features of his style of writing and have compared this to other extracts of his stories.

In Maths the focus has been on place value.and the children have been reading and writing 5-digit numbers and recognising the value of each digit.

In RE we have been discussing how the world began and have compared their own views against those of their learning partner.

In Science we will be learning about aspects of Earth and Space. This week the children have shared their existing knowledge of this topic and they took part in a Space quiz to see how much they know already. We have also considered different types of evidence, both direct and indirect evidence, for the shape of our Earth.

Our Computing topic this half term is all about the Mars Rover and this week the children have learnt about the automated motor vehicle and have  explored how and why the Mars Rover transfers data. To get an idea of the distance that the Mars Rover had to travel, the children also researched the distance to Mars based on the length of other objects, such as Big Ben, the length of a blue whale, the length of a double decker bus, and the length of a football pitch.

In our art lesson we have begun to look at the work of Hundertwasser and have used viewfinders to select and draw a section of his images into their sketchbooks.

PE days

Full PE kit will need to be worn on Tuesdays (swimming) and Wednesdays.

Homework

Year 5 will use online learning for their homework this year and on a Tuesday afternoon I will post the details of Year 5’s homework on the homework tab. Homework should be completed by the following Monday ready for spelling and times tables tests on a Tuesday. I will add more details next week.

Welcome to Year 5!

Welcome to Year 5! I hope you have all had a wonderful Summer and are ready to start the new year in Year 5. I look forward to welcoming you into class tomorrow and look forward to getting to know you all!

I just wanted to let you know our PE days will be Tuesdays (swimming) and Wednesdays.

Tuesdays will be swimming and this will start on Tuesday 6th September and take place each Tuesday throughout the year. The children will be accompanied to the pool by Miss Evans, Mrs McCooey and Mrs Hodgkiss .The children will need to come in their school PE kit for the day and will need with them their swimming kit in a separate bag to their school bag. Girls will need a one-piece swimsuit and boys will need swimming trunks (please see photo of acceptable type as baggy swim shorts are not allowed), a towel, swim hat for all girls and boys who have a longer hair style or fringe, and goggles if you returned the signed goggles letter. The children will not need shampoo or shower gel as they will only have time to rinse and get dressed quickly ready to return to school. If your child has asthma, inhalers will be taken to the pool by the teachers so please make sure your child has an up to date inhaler in school as soon as possible.

Well I really can’t believe that it’s time to say goodbye already. This year has gone by so quickly and I have enjoyed getting to know each of you individually and I am so proud of all of you! You have all been little stars and have worked so hard throughout the year and I’m really going to miss having you all in Year 5. However, I know you will continue to make us proud in Year 6 and show Miss Leahy what you are capable of! I hope you all have an enjoyable Summer and I wish you well for Year 6!

Shakespeare opportunity!

We are delighted to announce that in September the RSC are coming to our school with a First Encounters performance of Twelfth Night. As part of the performance, they need young actors to play the part of the sailors in Act 1 Scene 2 and as Year 5 did such a great job in Year 5, we have decided that we would like them to audition to be part of this when we return in September. If you would like to be considered, then over the Summer we would like you to prepare for the audition with the following script. Good luck!

Our week...

Our chance to say good bye!

This week the PTA organised for the children to have some time to say an official good bye and thank you to both Miss Haggerty and Mrs Wilson, who leave us next week to start their retirement. We made them a lovely little book each with some personal messages from the children to thank them both and to show them just how much we are going to miss them!

Our learning this week…

In English the children have been recognising how modal verbs can be used to indicate degrees of possibility. The children have also created a persuasive advert.

In maths the children have been looking at decimals including thousandths.

Geography - The children have used an ordnance survey map of Blackpool and have identified features on the map using six figure grid references. This week we also collated the results of the fieldwork questionnaires and the children have produced pie charts to analyse the data and draw conclusions.

In computing the children have decomposed a program on the micro-bit to work out the algorithms. The children were then challenged to program the micro-bit to function like a scoreboard to record the results of a game of ‘Rock, paper, scissors’.

In PE the children have used more challenging maps (netball court maps) to learn map orientation. The children worked as a team, co-operating and discussing effectively.

Performing at the RSC in Stratford-Upon-Avon

Congratulations to Samuel and Max, who were given the opportunity to perform on the RSC stage in Stratford- Upon-Avon this week. They had been chosen to represent our school alongside other children from schools in our Associate schools cluster to perform a scene from Much Ado About Nothing. Mrs Ormerod, who accompanied the boys to Stratford, said they were amazing and we’re just so proud of them both. Well done Samuel and Max! 👏🏻🎭

Music medals

Well done to Abigail, Ebony, Kyran, Maisy and Malachy who were all awarded either bronze or silver music medals in clarinet or flute this week. Miss Benson was delighted with their achievements and so are we! Well done!🎶

Storytelling fair - Thank you!

Thank you to our lovely PTA, who organised the Story telling fair on Friday night. They raised a fabulous £666 and we thank everyone who supported the fair.

Well done to Sam, who helped out at the fair as goal keeper. Sam stayed in goal for the full length of the fair and did a fabulous job. For his efforts, Sam was presented with a signed banner from Blackpool Football Club. Well done Sam!

Proud!

On Thursday morning we all had an enjoyable morning at Stanley Park, Year 5’s prize for winning the GULP challenge at the end of Year 4. The children enjoyed an hour on the low ropes and then an hour in the mole holes. They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were absolutely amazing! I was so proud of how well they all behaved and even more because of how well they all supported each other. Some children found the activities very challenging, but it was so lovely to see the children stopping to cheer each other on and to encourage by giving advice on how to proceed forward in the activities. The instructors at Stanley Park were also really impressed with them . Well done Year 5!!!

Our learning this week…

In English the children have recognised how adverbs can be used to indicate degrees of possibility and have shared their own sentences .

In maths the children have been identifying decimals up to two decimal places and finding their fraction equivalent.

In RE the children discussed why prayer is important and in groups have created their own prayer guide.

Science - This week the children have investigated materials that dissolve have been able to identify whether a material is soluble or insoluble.

Geography - The focus of our lesson this week was to identify four and six figure grid references and the children have located features on a map by using these grid references.

Spanish - This week children have listened to the story “La Oruga muy hambrienta” (The hungry caterpillar) and have joined in with the repeated sections of the story.

In art the children have added layers to their work on art inspired by Chris Ofili.

In Bounce Forward (PSHE) we have been talking about how being part of a team can make us more resilient. We watched a Madagascar movie clip and identified what made the penguins do well as part of a team. Year 5 then had to work as a team to play cooperation ball game, where they had to pass the ball around the circle without using their arms or hands.

We had a lovely start to the week with Sports day. Thank you to all of you who were able to come and support the children in their races. It was lovely to be able to get back to normal this year and I know the children enjoyed having you all there to cheer them on. I’m sure you will all agree that the children were fantastic and it was lovely to see them all working as a team and being supportive of each other. Well done Year 5!

Our learning this week…

In English we have begun to look at persuasive texts and have identified some of the key features.

In maths the children have solved problems involving fractions.

Science - The focus of the lesson this week was finding the best electrical conductor for a lighting circuit. The children tested different metals in a light bulb circuit and they found that the material that made the brightest bulb was the best.

Geography - This week the children used their maps that they created at home for homework to help them annotate their route to school on a digital map. They included physical and human features and created a key.

Spanish - The children have practised writing the date of their birthday and have also been able to say the birthday of a 3rd person, for example, a friend or family member.

In art the children have continued to work on their Chris Ofili inspired art work of Maya Gods .

In Bounce Forward (PSHE) we have been talking about how we can be more resilient and positive if we think about all the things that we are thankful for. It is easy to be hopeful when everything is going well, but sometimes things aren’t perfect and sometimes we have to look through positivity glasses to be able to see the good when things are tough. What a beautiful week we’ve had! The sunshine has certainly put a smile on everyone’s face and has made us all feel quite positive.

The children enjoyed their own clothes day today. Thank you so much for all your contributions of chocolates and books for the Story telling fair, we appreciate your generosity.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have been writing their own diary entry from the point of view of Billy from the modern Greek myth ‘Bling!’. They’ve been working really hard on their writing and have tried really hard to include their writing targets. I’m so pleased with the efforts put in by everyone and I’m looking forward to reading them. Well done Year 5!👏🏻

In maths the children have continued to work on fractions, particularly finding fractions of quantities, and they have used what they have learnt to solve problems.

In RE the children have learnt about the ways that Jesus is present among us in follow up to their initial ideas last week.

Geography - We began our new topic on the local area this week. We have begun to think about what kind of place Blackpool is and where it is in the world using various maps.

Spanish - The focus has been on being able to say the date and saying when their birthday is.

In art the children have continued to work on their Chris Ofili inspired art work of Maya Gods .

In HRSE we have been exploring the theme of peculiar feelings. We have talked about how we cope when a situation causes us to feel a certain emotion and have thought about positive and negative reactions.

Proud!

We’ve had another good week in Year 5. Yesterday we visited St Mary’s High school and the children took part in some lovely activities linked to both maths and science. They also got a tour of the school and the outside area, took part in a lovely meditation on the theme of community in their upper chapel and made their own rosary beads which they used to pray a decade of the rosary in the liturgy at the end of the day. The children really enjoyed their day and as always their behaviour made us extremely proud! Well done Year 5!

Our learning this week…

In English the children have been planning, developing and writing their own diary entry from the point of view of Billy from the modern Greek myth ‘Bling!’.

In maths the children have moved on to multiplying fractions and have really impressed me this week at how good they are. Well done Year 5!👏🏻

In RE the children have thought about whether Jesus is truly present among us. Initially the children had to think about their own response and then compare that to their friend’s ideas.

History - The children have learnt about the Maya hieroglyph writing system and have looked at some of the glyphs that the Maya used.

Spanish - The children have been recapping their numbers, days of the week and the months of the year.

In art the children have continued to work on their Chris Ofili inspired art work of Maya Gods .

In PE the children have worked in pairs navigating around courses following different maps - they’re really getting quite good at this!

Our week...

I can’t believe we’re already in to our last half term in Year 5 before they all go to Year 6! The time has flown by and it’s been a lovely year so far and they’ve achieved so much. We’ve had a great start to this half term and they have worked hard - starting as they mean to go on (Well done Year 5!).

Yesterday, we had the first of our high school visits. We spent the whole day at St.Bede’s, taking part in a Science and Design Technology day. The children really enjoyed their day and took part in some great activities and were thoroughly engaged! In Design Technology the children designed and made a popcorn cup and then, of course, tried it out by eating popcorn from it. In Science the children were challenged to a murder mystery and they had to do various scientific tests in order to work out who the murderer was. Both activities were a lot of fun and we were so impressed by all the children’s behaviour - and so were the St Bede’s staff! Well done Year 5, we’re very proud of you!

Our learning this week…

In English we have been looking at and identifying the features of diary writing in preparation for their own diary writing next week.

In maths the children have been subtracting mixed numbers and applying to solving problems.

In RE we’ve been looking at the meaning of the Resurrection and also looked at Pentecost, which was celebrated last Sunday.

In Science, the children identified the properties of materials through investigation and identified possible uses of the different materials.

History - The children have identified primary and secondary sources of evidence and have taken on the role of a historian to examine images (a secondary source) to identify aspects of Mayan civilisation.

Computing - The children programmed the microbit to do a polling programme. The children enjoyed testing their program on each other.

In PE the children worked in pairs to navigate around two courses following different maps.

In art the children have further developed their work from last half term, which was inspired by the work of artist Chris Ofili.

Thursday 16th June - St Mary’s Taster Day

During the taster day, the children will experience different activities in small groups along with other children from other primary schools.

We will leave Our Lady’s shortly after the beginning of the school day and will return to school before the end of the school day. The children will wear their usual school uniform and will need to take a packed lunch. If your child is usually on school dinners, or is eligible for free school meals, then school can provide a school packed lunch to take with us (please let school know, so these can be ordered in advance). The school office will have emailed you regarding this.

KS2 Sports Day - Monday 27th June

KS2 Sports Day will be held on the afternoon of Monday 27th June. Further details to follow. Parents will be invited to watch their child take part in our activities and races - this date is subject to the weather.

Own clothes day - Friday 24th June

To take part in this own clothes day, the PTFA ask that the children contribute a used book (for a stall at the Storytelling fair) and some chocolates (for a chocolate tombola at the Storytelling fair) .

Storytelling Fair - Friday 8th July

This will take place after school (3.30pm - 5.30pm) - more details to follow nearer the time.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee 2022

It was so lovely to see everyone dressed in red, white and blue today to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Thank you also for donating to school through the PFTA - if you have not done this yet, you still can through your ParentPay account.

We started our day with a KS2 assembly and together we sang the National anthem and another song , Here’s to the Queen, which was written to celebrate her Jubilee. In class we have been learning about the Queen, and this important celebration, and at lunch time the children enjoyed their Jubilee picnic outside. After lunch we took part in various garden party games and Jubilee crafts to celebrate.

To commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee, the children have come home with a special coin, kindly bought by our PTFA (A big thank you to them!), as a keepsake to remember this special occasion…

Our learning this week…

In English we have continued to look at including relative clauses in our writing and have created vivid images for the reader by using description and comparison.

In maths the children have been focusing on subtracting fractions including mixed numbers and using these to solve problems.

In RE the children imagined they were reporters on the day that Jesus resurrected and have written an article about what had happened.

Science - We had a visit from the school nurses this week. They came to talk to the children about the changes that children go through when they reach puberty.

In computing the children have planned an animation to code on the Microbits.

History - The children have learnt about the sophisticated number system created by the Maya civilisation.

In HRSE we have been talking about body image and have discussed how images in the media do not always reflect reality and can affect how people feel about themselves.

In Bounce Forward we have been identifying the link between emotions and behaviour and have explored positive coping strategies to enable them to create their own coping plan.

Well done to our reading champions this half term who have all completed bookmarks for reading regularly at home…

When the children read regularly, golden tickets are given out and then we do a draw at the end of each half term. Well done to Gabriella, who is our golden ticket winner for this half term.

School reopens on the 6th June.

High School Taster Days…

After half term, Year 5 will have the opportunity to visit both St Bede’s and St Mary’s Catholic High Schools to experience a taster day. Please see the letters that came home this week. This will be a great chance for the children to experience what it will be like to attend High school ahead of making their choices next year in year 6.

Thursday 9th June - St Bede’s Science and Tech Day

The day will include a Forensic Science problem solving activity with the Science Department and a session in one of their Technology disciplines.
