The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (also known as Candlemas) is today, 2.2.24. The season of Epiphany ends, we remember when Jesus was brought to the Temple by his parents. This is a day when candles are blessed in Church and taken home and lit to share the Light of the World within our homes.

We have been extremely busy with our learning in Year 3 this week. Here’s what we have been up to…

In Maths, the children have solved some really challenging multiplication and division word problems with multiple steps. This was not easy but the children were very resilient! We have now started a new maths topic, money.

In English, the children have looked at the 7 natural wonders of the world. They have written a diary entry as an explorer who has visited one of the wonders. Next week, the children will write an information leaflet about one of the natural wonders.

In RE, the children have learned about Jesus’ miracles and why he performed them, to show the power of having faith and trust in God. We also worked on our RE display in our table groups, which will be about the parable of the sower.

In Science, we learned about fossils and how they are formed.

In PE, the children have continued net and wall and handball.

As part of our RE lesson on Thursday, the children learned about St Therese of Lisieux. She is an inspiring Saint, who was determined to show others how to spread the kingdom of God. Some children then took to the hotseat and answered questions as St Therese of Lisieux. I must say, they did a wonderful job!

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths, we have been solving problems using multiplication and division.

In English, the children have planned and written their setting narrative.

In RE, the children have listened and learned about the parable of the sower.

In Science, we have continued our investigation, looking closely at rocks. The children investigated their density, permeability, durability and decided if they were hard or soft.

In PE, the children have continued net and wall, we did speed stacking cups instead of handball due to the rain.

The children have had a great week in Year 3. On Thursday, we had the opportunity to go to Mass as a class. Father Frank allowed all of the children to come up to the altar during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the children were fascinated to watch the blessing so close up. It was a really special moment. Father also reminded the children of the importance of listening and how this can take many forms. Not just listening with your ears!

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths, we have been using our multiplication knowledge to have a go at expanded multiplication using the column method. This requires lots of practise, please ensure you see the homework page and support your children in having another go at this at home.

In English, we have been looking at an example text of a setting narrative inspired by the waterfalls in The Rhythm of the Rain, next week we will begin planning our own setting narratives.

In RE, the children have listened and learned about two parables that Jesus told. The parable of the hidden treasure and the parable of the pearl. They have learned about parables being told to convey a message about how we should live our lives, as God wants us to.

In Science, we have started an investigation looking closely at rocks. We will continue the investigation next week.

In PE, the children have continued their topics - handball and net and wall.

Happy new year and welcome back to a new school term. It has been wonderful working with Year 3 this week, they have returned to school after their Christmas break with a great attitude towards their learning. Father Frank has told the children some key words to try to remember. ‘listen, learn and enjoy’ and ‘do your best’. This absolutely echoes the messages which I try to encourage the children to follow every day, so we are working hard to remind the children of this at all times.

Our new focus in RE is Galilee to Jerusalem, this week the children have learned about the Epiphany and written the story as if they were one of the wise men. We have also learned about The Kingdom of God, the children have realised that it is here on earth when we follow in Jesus’ footsteps, using parables as our example. The children wrote down deeds which they will try to do to spread The Kingdom of God.

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths, we have been using our multiplication and division knowledge to compare maths statements and solve word problems.

In English, we have started our new book focus, The Rhythm of the Rain, we have enjoyed looking closely at the illustrations and the children are going to be preparing to write their own setting narrative, next week.

In Science, we have started our new topic, rocks! The children learned about natural and man made rocks.

In PE, the children have started their new topics - handball and net and wall.

We had a special visit on Friday from three local police officers/PCSO’s. They spoke to the children about their job, when it is appropriate to call 999 and the children were able to try lots of Police equipment. The children really enjoyed this and I hope they all take something away from this visit, which will help them in the future.

This Sunday marks the third week of advent, when the Hope candle will be lit. During the third week of Advent we are filled with joy for the near arrival of Jesus on Christmas day. This Sunday is often called ‘Gaudete Sunday’ as we reflect on the joy the shepherd’s felt at the birth of Jesus.

We had the privilege of watching Reception’s and KS1’s nativities this week, when they showed us the story of Jesus’ birth through song, dance and acting!

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths, we have continued problem solving, using our multiplication and division knowledge.

In English, we have practiced the use of commas and inverted commas (two of the main targets from Year 3’s independent write). I hope to see the children using these in their writing going forward.

In Science, we have completed our investigation and the children have drawn their conclusions.

This Sunday marks the second Sunday of Advent. On this day the Peace Candle, also known as the ‘Bethlehem Candle’, will be lit. The Bethlehem Candle is purple, signifying repentance and royalty. It recalls the preparations Mary and Joseph made for Jesus’ birth. As we’re getting ready for Christmas, let’s make our plans and carry them out. But, it is important not get so wrapped up in our own preparations that we’re too busy to appreciate what God is doing in our lives and that Advent is preparing us for the birth of Christ, our Saviour. Today, Fr. Frank led Year 3 in a lovely Advent reflection.

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths, we have been multiplying and dividing by 4, 6 and 8. All children should have their TT Rockstars log in details stuck in their Reading Record. If they have not been bringing their reading record into school, it will not be stuck in. Please ensure they bring it every day.

In English, the children have written their own fables this week. I have been blown away with their story writing and creativity.

In RE, the children learned about Advent and made their Advent promises. They created their own Advent wreath and stuck their promise in the middle on the white candle. They look great!

In Science, we started planning our investigation to see whether people with a longer femur jump further than people with a shorter femur. We hope to carry out this investigation next week.

In Geography, the children did some research on the laptops to find out about their chosen European country. They have produced some lovely information posters about this.

This Sunday 3rd December marks the first Sunday of Advent and the start to the Church’s new liturgical year. On this day, the Hope candle will be lit. Advent comes from the Latin word meaning "coming." Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a season of preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of preparation and penance. In Year 3, next week we will be making our Advent Promises.

Here is what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths we have been focusing on multiplication and division, with a particular focus on using our 3 times table knowledge. Speedy recall of our timetables is vital for this.

In English, the children have planned their own fable, ready to write next week.

In Science, the children have labelled the bones in a human skeleton.

In Geography, we looked at the major capital cities of Europe.

In PE, we enjoyed managing to get outside this Thursday and were able to do some dodgeball games.

Tomorrow marks Armistice Day: November 11th. On Sunday 12th, it is Remembrance Sunday. Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War in 1919 to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. We wanted to gather as a school as a mark of respect to remember and pray for all those fallen soldiers, who have bravely fought for our country in past wars, and also for those who are still fighting for our country now. Year 6 lead our Remembrance Day assembly beautifully. Year 3 made poppies to bring home, to help them remember, for this weekend.

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths we have been using our knowledge of the column method to add and subtract 3 digit numbers with other 3 digit numbers. We will continue this next week, exchanging numbers for subtraction has been particularly challenging, but I am sure Year 3 will crack this next week.

In English we have continued with our Fox unit. We have been learning new vocabulary and writing sentences about the Fox and Magpie including the new vocabulary and conjunctions. The children also wrote poems about the Fox and Magpie.

In RE we looked closely at the different parts of Mass and why we do certain things, for example when we genuflect.

In Science we looked at skeletons and the children grouped animals into vertebrates and invertebrates.

In Geography, the children have continued learning about the countries in Europe and where we would find them on a map.

In Music the children enjoyed doing a quiz to test their musical knowledge and responding to a piece of country music.

We welcomed in this new half term with a whole school mass to celebrate the feast of All Saints. This was also a joint celebration to mark Our Lady’s School’s 70th birthday! It was a lovely start to the week and a time to reflect on what it is to be saint. Fr. Frank talked about how the word ‘Saint’ means holy and to be a saint is to treat others as we would treat Jesus. After mass, the parishioners from Our Lady’s were invited over to the school hall for tea, coffee, biscuits and a chance to reminisce on the history of Our Lady’s school. We had also delved into the archives and managed to get pictures of Our Lady’s school along with past pupils and teachers, from years passed.

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths, we have been using the column method to do addition and subtraction. Thank-you for supporting the children at home with this, through their homework.

In English, we have started our new book focus. The children have been writing simile’s about a Fox and they have been thinking about what the story will involve.

In RE, we learned about why we go to Mass Sunday and the children reflected on key quotes from the bible and when they may turn to them for comfort.

In PE, the children started their new kicking unit and we enjoyed speed stacking cups in the classroom as the rain stopped us from starting our dodgeball unit!

I am so pleased with how well all of the Year 3’s have settled into the Year 3 routine and expectations. We have managed to cover so much in 7 weeks. Looking at place value, and adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers with one and two digit numbers. We have had narrative and explanation text writing, we’ve covered a range of topics. The class have been so engrossed in their History topic, ‘The Stone Age’, and we have looked in-depth at 'Creation and Covenant’, linking this with our beliefs and making links with scripture.

Today we had our Harvest festival and we came together as a whole school to celebrate this. Thank you for your generous contributions to our Harvest collection, it’s' very much appreciated. The tins of food (over 500 tins!) will be going to a local food bank for people within the community, which I’m sure you’ll agree is a worthy cause. Thank you for your generous support!

This afternoon the children were very excited to have a visit from a therapy dog. The dog came in to visit all the children in a special assembly and after half term, he’ll be working with children in Year 2.

Here is what else we have been up to this week….

In Maths we have been learning how to use the column method to help us to add 3 digit and two digit numbers. We will continue to work using the column method after half term, which is why I have set some column method homework to be completed during the holidays please. It will really help the children to access our learning when we return, next week.

In English the children have written an explanation text this week. They have been so creative! The children were asked to plan how to capture the Iron Man. The class have also drawn their designs and annotated them. We also finished our class novel this week, I think a few children would like a copy of The Sheep Pig at home, we enjoyed it that much!

In RE we learned about co creators and de creators. The children decided they wanted to be co creators, as God made us all Stewards of his creation. The children thought about how they could help to look after God’s creation and wrote a letter to God.

In History we looked at artefacts and what they can tell us about the Stone Age. We also enjoyed reading the Stone Age Boy as a class.

This week we also had our first class mass. Year 3 had lots of compliments for their lovely behaviour in Church, welldone Year 3!

Year 3 Class Mass - Thursday 19th October 2023

On Thursday, Year 3 will be attending the parish mass in church at 9.30am. This will be a great opportunity to worship and gather within the parish community. Parents and carers are warmly welcomed to join us in church.

In English, the children have used their plan to write their own approaching threat narrative about the Iron Man. They have worked hard to include all of the elements required to meet the success criteria for this piece of writing. Mrs Dunford and I have been really impressed with their descriptive language, similes and use of questions to create suspense in their story. Each child has revisited every paragraph and made improvements to their work independently. All of the children should be very proud of themselves.

In Maths, we have been subtracting ones from a three digit number and we have then moved on to adding and subtracting tens from a three digit number. We will continue with this next week. I have been impressed with the amount of children wishing to challenge their knowledge with tricky questions and the many children have who wished to work without adult support, to show just what they can do.

In RE, we have been looking at Psalm 8 Hymn of Creation and the children have thought about their favourite parts of God’s creation, aswell as the importance of taking care of God’s creation.

In Science, skeletons and muscles have been our focus this week. The children identified where lots of bones were in their own bodies and they learned about how two muscles work together to create movement.

In History, the children have enjoyed learning about the three periods of the stone age and what happened in each of the eras.

In Art, the children have been drawing their own picture of the Iron Man, inspired by the work of Vincent Van Gogh in his Starry Night picture.

Year 3 have also been enjoying their Spanish, PE and HRSE lessons.

This half term, our RE focus is Creation and Covenant. The children are now very familiar with the story of God’s creation, from their learning in previous years at our school and church, aswell as at home. In Year 3, we are looking closely at what happens in this powerful poem. A key message from the creation story is the importance of caring for our common home. Pope Francis reminds us of the importance of the first account of Creation. Pope Francis draws attention to the ‘profound teachings about human existence… They suggest that human life is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbour and with the earth itself.’

This week, the children have been thinking deeply about what being made in the image of God means for them and how they can try to reflect God in different ways. In our class worships, we have been thinking about Jesus being with us, the children have reflected on their days and been reminded that Jesus is with us and we can ask him to help us to make the right choices. The children have written their own personal prayers to God, asking for his help with specific things which they require help with.

In English, the children have been writing similes about the Iron Man. We have then moved onto planning our own ‘Approaching Threat Narrative’, which the children will be writing next week.

In Maths, we have been adding 3 digit numbers to 1 digit numbers. This has been challenging but the children are working really hard to understand this. Especially when the ones result in the tens number changing aswell!

In Science, the children have learned about the uses of skeletons in humans and some animals. We will continue to learn more about this next week.

At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters.

Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.

This month’s online safety guides give helpful advice about…

Among Us: a futuristic murder mystery that’s found an enthusiastic audience of young gamers.

We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all.

The children’s daily prayers this week have focused on God’s amazing love, it’s hard for us to fully understand. On Monday, the children were asked to celebrate the different aspects of God’s love and show love to others through their words and actions throughout the week.

Our Learning this week..

In English, we have continued our focus on the Iron Man. The children used their learning from last week, around the descriptive language of the cliffs and sea, when writing their own setting descriptions. They have also been preparing for writing their own narrative about an approaching threat (as we currently see the Iron Man as this, having only read Chapter 1 and part of Chapter 2).

Our class novel at the moment is The Sheep Pig, we read this daily. I wonder if the children have mentioned this? We are really enjoying this story time together.

Now we are able to access the Star Reader in school, the children will soon all have an up to date ZPD, which means they will select home reading books that are appropriate for their current reading ability. They will also complete a quiz about the book which they have read, in school, once they have finished the book. Please ensure you keep updating the reading log when the children read at home.

In Maths, we have continued our number line work and comparing numbers up to 1000. Using greater than and less than, and solving problems about this. Next week, we are moving onto addition and subtraction.

In Science, we have looked into the importance of exercise to keep our bodies fit and healthy. Now the children have a clearer understanding of what we need to do to keep our bodies and mind in the best shape it can be. Eating a balanced diet with a variety of nutrients and doing regular exercise. For children in our class, we would hope they are exercising for atleast 60 minutes per day.

The children had their photos taken on Monday so they should be with you soon!

There are an awful lot of children telling me that they are being picked up by other people and this has not been communicated to us by their known adult. This is a safeguarding issue and I cannot let children go, unless I have been informed officially.

  • I now have access to the Year 3 email account, please be aware that these are only checked once, weekly. This is not my preferred method of contact with you, I would prefer you to catch Mrs Dunford at the beginning of the day, myself at the end of the school day or a phone call to the office. Any emails received before now will be treated as non-urgent, as I would expect any queries should now have been resolved. Any emails received from now will be read, when I can, but they may not receive an email as a response. If I think it requires a response, you may get a phone call or I may catch you at the end of the day.

In our class worships this week, our focus has been on forgiveness. As a class, the children have been spending time thinking about this and putting it into practice, which is great to see. In RE, we have been looking closely at the poetry and symbolism in the first creation story from Genesis, noticing the language within it that helps us to understand how the world was formed. We went to Mass on Tuesday and enjoyed our first service at Church of this academic year.

In English, we have continued looking at chapter 1 and 2 of the Iron Man. We have paid particular attention to the descriptive language of the cliffs and sea. The children went on to read a poem called The Sea by James Reeves, in small groups they have performed their poem to the class. We will use this as inspiration next week, as the children will be writing their own setting descriptions.

In Maths, we have continued our number line work and comparing numbers up to 1000. Using greater than and less than, and solving problems about this.

In Science, we have looked further into food groups and the 7 main nutrients that foods can provide. The children selected 10 foods that they could buy which would include a healthy balance of the food groups and nutrients.

In Spanish, the children enjoyed finding Spain on the Map and learning about the traditions in Spain.
