2nd Week of Advent
This week we are in the second week of Advent. This week, we lit the Peace candle. As always, we started the week as a whole school on Monday morning, with Mrs Allen leading the worship and lighting the second candle of our Advent wreath. After this worship, Emily, Beaux and Natalia showcased their musical talents by playing us a few pieces of music on their cornets (Emily & Natalia) and Euphonium (Beaux). We were all very impressed!
This Week's Learning
This week the class got their results back from the SATs papers they sat last week. We have used some of our Maths and English learning time to go over some of the questions from the Maths and GPS paper.
In Maths this week we continued with algebra, with the main focus being on substitution values into a formula.
In English we identified expanded noun phrases in a passage from the Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy first meets the scarecrow. We then used this passage to create another toolkit on 'introducing new characters'. By the end of the week we started to plan for our shared write.
In PE with me this week we used some apparatus to help us to create gymnastics sequences on different levels. The class really enjoyed creating these and showing them to the rest of the class, who gave some great feedback.
In Science we looked at different types of microorganisms: bacteria, virus, fungi and protozoa. We compared each organism and used this knowledge to write a summary for each of them. We also set up a science investigation on fungi. We have placed three slices of bread in bags; one is dry and at room temp., one is dry and in a fridge and the other is damp and at room temp. Over the next week we will observe any changes and record them.
In Computing this week we looked at Nested Loops. We drew upon our learning from last lesson, drawing basic shapes using code but added 'repeat' codes in there to create loops. We had to work out how to code our turtle to turn as well so that they didn't just go over the same shape over and over again!
AWARD WINNERS!

Maths Award: this week’s Maths Award went to Gabriel for the progress he is making in his maths!

Notices
- Change in PE days!! Due to the hall being unavailable on Friday mornings, I have changed our other PE day to Thursdays instead of Friday. Apologies for the change. Just to confirm, PE days from next week will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
- Water bottles-these need to be filled and brought in each day and taken home to be cleaned at the end of each day. Each child in the class was provided with a school water bottle-please can you ensure these are the bottles that are brought in daily and not their own water bottle from home.
- Reading books - Year 6 have their ZPDs for this half term. We do want the children to challenge themselves with their home readers, so please do let me know if you ever think the book they are reading at home is perhaps not challenging enough.
- Homework- Please find details on this week’s homework here. If your child very finds any of the homework challenging, please remind them to mention it to me in school and we can go over it together.
- Contact information- We no longer access the year group email (year6@…) If you need to contact me for any reason, and cannot catch me at the door, feel free to either pop an email to the admin address (with Year 6 in the subject box) or give the school a ring.
Online Safety at Our Lady's
At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters.
Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.
This month’s online safety guide gives helpful advice about…
What Parents & Educators Need to Know about toy scalping, fakes and scams. This online safety guide explores the world of online scalping, where bots snap up high-demand items for resale at extortionate prices, and explains the risks to children and young people.
Scalping has long been a frustration for fans hoping to bag concert tickets or exclusive toys, but the online world has supercharged this dishonest tactic. Scalpers use bots to buy up stock in seconds, then resell items such as consoles or collectibles at significant mark-ups. For young people, it can be disappointing and harmful to their wallets, wellbeing and worldview.
As this unethical practice becomes more visible, and, worryingly, sometimes glamourised online, it’s important to talk to children about fairness, financial boundaries, and spotting scams. This guide breaks down the tricks of the trade and how to avoid them, helping young consumers stay safe, informed and scam-free.
We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all. Thank you.
