Last Sunday marked the second Sunday of Advent. The second Sunday of Advent symbolises Peace with the “Bethlehem Candle” reminding us of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. There is comfort to be found when we pause to read, pray, and reflect over the course of the Advent season...a time when believers eagerly anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth. The second Sunday of Advent gives us the opportunity to prepare our hearts in faithful waiting, celebrate the birth of Jesus, and ready ourselves for his second coming. It's a beautiful chance to reflect on the ways prophecy has been fulfilled and to ponder what the future (promised to us through prophecies) will bring.

Great team work!

We’ve had a fantastic week in Year 5. They were set a number of challenges this week in our DT lessons. In the first of these sessions, the children were split into three groups and given a different challenge. One group had to make a simple frame from wood, using tools safely. The second group had to make a a moving vehicle using tech card and their knowledge of circuits and the third group had to make a vehicle shell for a chosen planet and design it using their knowledge of that planet. All the children worked extremely well and completed their challenges…

The children were then put into small groups and together as a team they were set the challenge of designing and making a moon buggy model. The children designed their buggy, deciding on the materials that they would need and set off making it. By the end of the morning the children finished their moon buggies. I am so impressed with how hard they all worked and more impressed with the maturity they all showed, working in their teams supporting each other and with good cooperation and collaboration. Take a look at what they achieved…

The children enjoyed Christmas dinner this week. They all looked great in their Christmas jumpers too!

Our award winners:

Our learning this week…

In English, we’ve been planning our formal report ready to complete it next week.

In maths we have been adding and subtracting fractions within 1.

In RE, the children have been learning how Jesus is the fulfilment of God's promise to David.

This week’s prayer and liturgy was planned and led by Ava and Eddie. In their liturgy, they were thinking about a special person called John the Baptist. He helped prepare people for Jesus by telling them to turn back to God and live better lives. John asked people to say sorry for the wrong things they did and to be ready for Jesus. This reminds us that sometimes we need to stop and think about how we can make better choices and follow God more closely. The children thought about what John said and thought about how we can prepare our hearts for Jesus.

Just like John the Baptist helped people get ready for Jesus, we can get our hearts ready too by choosing to follow God and live with love.

“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.”

Matthew 11:10

In geography, the children have been investigating the link between longitude and time zones. The children compared the times of places in the Americas to 12pm in the UK (Greenwich Mean Time).

In Spanish, the children have continued to put into practice their knowledge gained of dates and sharing their birthday, over the last few months, through reading, writing, speaking and listening.

In PE the children are working with PE specialist Max from Blackpool Football Club Community Trust. The focus of PE this half term is tennis.

At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters.

Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.

This month’s online safety guide gives helpful advice about…

What Parents & Educators Need to Know about toy scalping, fakes and scams. This online safety guide explores the world of online scalping, where bots snap up high-demand items for resale at extortionate prices, and explains the risks to children and young people.

Scalping has long been a frustration for fans hoping to bag concert tickets or exclusive toys, but the online world has supercharged this dishonest tactic. Scalpers use bots to buy up stock in seconds, then resell items such as consoles or collectibles at significant mark-ups. For young people, it can be disappointing and harmful to their wallets, wellbeing and worldview.

As this unethical practice becomes more visible, and, worryingly, sometimes glamourised online, it’s important to talk to children about fairness, financial boundaries, and spotting scams. This guide breaks down the tricks of the trade and how to avoid them, helping young consumers stay safe, informed and scam-free.

We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all. Thank you.
