To form a progressive tense, use a form of the helping verb "to be" followed by a main verb ending in "-ing" to show an ongoing action. For the present progressive, use "am," "is," or "are" (e.g., "I am reading"); for the past progressive, use "was" or "were" (e.g., "They were playing"); and for the future progressive, use "will be" (e.g., "She will be going").
