1st Week of Advent
This week marked the first week of Advent, with Sunday 30th November being the first Sunday of Advent. On this week, we lit the Hope candle. We started the week as a whole school on Monday morning, while Fr. Frank led an Advent liturgy. This was a lovely way to gather together and reflect on what Advent means for us and how we can prepare for the coming of Christ.
In our RE lesson this week we made our Advent promises and reflected on the symbolism of the Advent wreath. We explained what each candle represented as well as drawing on the significance of the circular wreath and the evergreen greenery used.
This Week's Learning
This week was have completed some more SATs practice papers. Like the last papers we did, these are still being used for gap analysis so I can target whole class teaching and intervention accordingly. Yet again I was SO impressed with the class' attitude towards these papers-they all tried their best! Thank you, Year 6. Next week they will get all of their scores back and I will send them home with their scores for parents to see too.
In Maths this week we continued to take on Algebra, but this week the focus was more on writing algebraic expressions and substituting values into algebra formulas. I am impressed with the class' resilience when it comes to algebra as it is not the easiest!
In English we compared introductions from several different classic fiction texts. We used a key to identify common devices used in each of these and this then led us to create a 'Classic Fiction Intro' toolkit. This will come in useful when we start to plan and write our guided write next week!
In PE with me this week we used some apparatus to help us to create gymnastics sequences on different levels. The class really enjoyed creating these and showing them to the rest of the class, who gave some great feedback.
In Science we looked at different species of animals and what order they belonged to. We had to research this for several different animals and then use this information to design our own zoo. We had to explain what we had put certain animals in each place, for example, placing all carnivores in a similar area.
In HRSE this week we watched another episode of Paradise Street. The focus of this lesson was on emotional well being. We look at some scenarios in which we might be inclined to react in a certain emotional way, which is not always the best way to deal with problems. We looked at alternative strategies we could use if we found ourselves feeling in the 'red zone'.

Notices
- Change in PE days!! Due to the hall being unavailable on Friday mornings, I have changed our other PE day to Thursdays instead of Friday. Apologies for the change. Just to confirm, PE days from next week will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
- Water bottles-these need to be filled and brought in each day and taken home to be cleaned at the end of each day. Each child in the class was provided with a school water bottle-please can you ensure these are the bottles that are brought in daily and not their own water bottle from home.
- Reading books - Year 6 have their ZPDs for this half term. We do want the children to challenge themselves with their home readers, so please do let me know if you ever think the book they are reading at home is perhaps not challenging enough.
- Homework- Please find details on this week’s homework here. If your child very finds any of the homework challenging, please remind them to mention it to me in school and we can go over it together.
- Contact information- We no longer access the year group email (year6@…) If you need to contact me for any reason, and cannot catch me at the door, feel free to either pop an email to the admin address (with Year 6 in the subject box) or give the school a ring.
