It’s feeling like Christmas in Year 5 this week and it has really lifted everyone’s spirits. We have our Christmas trees up, twinkly fairy lights are lit and our advent wreath candles and Nativity set are in place. Last Sunday marked the first Sunday in Advent, which symbolises Hope with the “Prophet’s Candle” reminding us that Jesus is coming. On Monday, Father Frank came into school to mark the start of Advent and explained the meaning of Advent and the wreath. The children have all made their advent promises, which we linked to scripture, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Please ask your child about their advent promise.

Our learning this week…
In English, we’ve been looking at how to construct complex sentences and have been writing sentences including relative clauses. We’ve also been adding subordinating conjunctions to create subordinate clauses at the beginning and end of sentences.
In maths we have been converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. They’ve also been comparing and ordering fractions less than one.
In RE, the children have written their own psalm using Psalm 23, which was written by King David and used as a model of prayer.
This week’s prayer and liturgy was planned and led by Archer and Luna. In their liturgy, they were thinking about being ready and staying awake for Jesus. In the Bible reading, Jesus tells us that we don’t know the exact time when He will come back, so we have to be prepared and live in a way that shows we follow Him every day. This means being kind, honest, and loving, not just waiting but doing our best now. Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

Jesus wants us to live each day with love and kindness so we are ready when He comes. Let’s try to follow Him in everything we do.
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
Matthew 24: 42
In Science, the children have explored the effect of friction and have used Newton meters to find out the force applied.
We began our work in DT today. The topic is vehicles and the children were challenged to make a chassis with some materials...
In geography, the children have been investigating the link between latitude and climate. The children have looked at climate graphs of places in the Americas and have identified the climate .
In Spanish, the children have continued to put into practice their knowledge gained of dates and sharing their birthday, over the last few months, through reading, writing, speaking and listening.
In PE the children are working with PE specialist Max from Blackpool Football Club Community Trust. The focus of PE this half term is tennis.
