This Week's Learning
In Maths this week we tackled algebra. I use the word 'tackled' as it certainly was not the easiest concept! Some of us are still getting our heads around using letters to represent values! However, I was really impressed with the progress made. Many of the class are now able to use algebra to express rules and substitute values into algebraic expressions.
In English we watched the film version of The Wizard of Oz! We then planned and wrote a formal letter to the Wizard of Oz, in the role of Scarecrow. We were writing to persuade the great and powerful Oz to give us a brain! We had to ensure we maintained a formal tone throughout.
In RE we continued our focus on the women of the Old Testament. This week we debated the statement 'Looking at the role of women in the story of salvation, women today do not play large enough of a role in the Church'. We looked at both sides of this argument. One side we explored was the importance of those female roles within the Church, including nuns/sisters, readers, eucharistic ministers and much more. The other side we looked at was the lack of opportunuties within the Church for women to take on higher roles such as priests/deacons/bishops.
In PE with me this week we created partner sequences, including a balance, a roll, a turn and a jump. We also had to consider synchronization in these sequences.
In Geography our focus was on hills and mountains in the UK. We research the elevation of several mountains in the UK and what country they were in. We then presetned this data in a bar chart.
In Computing this week we used the coding programme Logo (Turtle Academy). We wrote a few lines of code to get our turtle to create different shapes. It also highlighted just how important it is that we write the codes exactly as they should be, as we would need to debug if we even got the slightest of details wrong! Take a looking at the coding we input to create repeated patterns...

Water bottles-these need to be filled and brought in each day and taken home to be cleaned at the end of each day. Each child in the class was provided with a school water bottle-please can you ensure these are the bottles that are brought in daily and not their own water bottle from home.
-
Reading books - Year 6 have their ZPDs for this half term. We do want the children to challenge themselves with their home readers, so please do let me know if you ever think the book they are reading at home is perhaps not challenging enough.
-
Homework- Please find details on this week’s homework here. If your child very finds any of the homework challenging, please remind them to mention it to me in school and we can go over it together.
-
Contact information- We no longer access the year group email (year6@…) If you need to contact me for any reason, and cannot catch me at the door, feel free to either pop an email to the admin address (with Year 6 in the subject box) or give the school a ring.
