All Saints Whole School Mass

On Thursday we all headed over to church to celebrate the feast of All Saints. Gathering as a school for worship is always such an important part of our week and this week we had the opportunity to commemorate and honour all saints, both known and unknown, that have gone to heaven. We know these special people led holy lives and used their time on earth to live out the Word of God. Could we be future saints perhaps? What can we do to show we are people of God? We discussed these questions in class and looked at what makes a saint a saint!

Year 6 Worship

Thank you to Aibhin and Emily for leading this week's worship. They focused on this week's Gospel reading where Jesus delivers the Beatitudes during the Sermon on the Mount. They reflected beautifully on how we can be God's cheerleaders and live out our lives as he wants us to and ended the worship leading the singing of the hymn 'Peace, Perfect Peace.'

This Week's Learning...

Here is what we have been up to this week…

In Maths we began the week finding fractions of amounts before moving on to imperial and metric measurements. We have been converting between units of measurements in order to solve problems.

In English we continued with our unit on 'Classic Fiction'. This week, we explored some vocabulary, including archaic language, from the opening paragraph of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by Frank L Baum. We then deepened our understanding of this text through close reading. What did this text tell us and what did it show us? We then watched a video clip of the beginning of the film version, focusing on cinematic choices of sounds: what effect did they have?

In Geography we started our first unit 'The UK'. First we did a whiole class quiz to test our existing knowledge on the UK. We then took a blank map of the UK and had a go at located the four countries and capital cities, as well as other islands that at part of the UK.

In HRSE we had a lesson on the 'Zones of Regulation'. We are using this across the school so we used this lesson to educate ourselves on what the different zones and emotions are and what strategies we can use to help us regulate our emotions when we are in a particular zone. Ask you child at home about the four zones! All of these strategies are things they can use at home as well as school. For example, if they are in the Red Zone, perhaps feeling angry or frustrated, we talked about listening to music, doing breathing exercises, talking to an adult or shaking it out.

In Music this week our school was pary of 'Culture Fest'. On Tuesday and Wednesday we had musicians join us who shared their passion for music. We did singing and listened to instruments from different parts of the world. Year 6 were in a lucky position as after Tuesday's whole school assembly, we had a one-to-one workshop with one of the musicians. Her name was Emmanuela and she was from the Congo in Africa. She shared spome African music with us and has us playing all sorts of instuments to accompany the music. We loved it!
