This week we had our first class mass on the theme of Creation, which is also the theme of our RE lessons this half term. On Wednesday, Father came into class to ask the children to think about the answers to some questions, What is Creation? What is the difference between creation and construction? Father also challenged the children to create something. It was lovely to see the children’s thoughtful responses and thank you to all the children who were able to create something and brought it to mass with them. During Father’s time with us on Wednesday, he also taught us a song to sing at the end of mass, “If I were a butterfly” - one I remember and loved from my primary school days. Well done Year 5, you all listened well throughout mass and behaved with reverence and our readers read beautifully. Thank you also to the parents who were able to join us in mass yesterday.

European Day of Languages is held every year on 26th September to celebrate the different languages spoken in Europe. The first European Day of Languages was held in 2001. It was started by the European Commission and Council of Europe to show the importance of language learning. In class we have talked about the importance of learning a new language and the children were given the opportunity to share languages that they speak at home or have a connection with. We then learnt more about Spain, its culture and practised using the language.

School are inviting children to bring in tins for our food collection to celebrate Harvest this year. We are asking children to do tasks at home in order to earn food items to contribute to the collection, which is highly valued by Blackpool Foodbank. Thank you in advance for your support with this. From all at Our Lady’s.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have put themselves in the moon boots of Neil Armstrong and have written their own reflection in his voice using first person. They’ve also been thinking about how to describe the moon, what the astronauts must have seen, what they were thinking and how they must have felt.

Our focus in maths has been comparing, ordering and rounding numbers to 100,000. We’ve also been exploring Roman numerals.

In RE the children have been working with Mrs Mannix on the Creation story.

This week’s prayer and liturgy was planned and led by Eleena and Leo. The theme of their liturgy was Servant of All. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus’ disciples argue about who is the ‘greatest’. It teaches us that the most important things in life are not winning, being the best or most beautiful. Instead, Jesus taught His disciples that true greatness in God’s sight means putting others first. Eleena and Leo then asked the class to write their own prayer.

“Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35

In science we have been learning about the movement of the Earth relative to the sun.

In geography the children have used an 8 point compass to describe the location of counties in England.

In Spanish we are continuing to focus on greeting each other and developing our knowledge of counting.

In art we continued to develop our work on Hundertwasser .

In PE the children are working with PE specialist Charlie from Blackpool Football Club Community Trust. The focus of their lessons this half term is all about leadership and being a good buddy to develop their skills for their role as play leader.

Our school is currently in 5th place out of 12 schools in the trust. We have 596 points.

This month’s online safety guide gives helpful advice about…

What Parents & Educators Need to Know about Instagram  This free guide tells you all you need to know about the social media platform Instagram, breaking down its associated risks and how best to mitigate them.

We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all. Thank you.
