Good afternoon everyone,
It has been lovely to see you all again and we hope you had a peaceful and joyous Easter break. This week we have been focusing on Easter. We have learned about the promise and hope it brings and how it rejuvenates our relationship with God through the sacrifice of His Son.
English - We continued our work on Grandad’s Island. We have read the story, identified and used possessive apostrophes, made inferences about the author’s choice of language and collectively attempted some SATS-style questions based upon the story.
Maths - In Maths we have been working on division. We have been exploring the links between division and multiplication, exploring both grouping and sharing and how we can tackle these questions and have been solving problems involving dividing by 2 and 5.
Science - In Science, we begun our topic on plants. We planted a sunflower seed and a freesia bulb and will observe them as they grow. We also learned about the four main parts of a plant, labelled them and wrote about their function.
RE - In RE, we looked at the paschal candle, its significance and what each symbol on it means. We then created our own candles, thinking carefully about their meaning. We have also delved deeper into the sequence and symbolism of the Easter story and have retold it in our own words, ready for some more in-depth learning next week.
Geography - Due to illness before half term, we spent our first week back completing last half term’s Geography topic. We explored and learned about Cape Verde and compared the similarities and differences between it and the Isle of Coll.
PE - In our first PE lesson we began a unit of work on striking and fielding where we hope to build up our skills to play rounders! Our second PE lesson has focused upon fundamental movements skills.
Art - We have been looking at collage and have learned about Henri Matisse. We began to look at his work ‘The Snail’ and use ripping and tearing skills to create our own collage patterns.
Computing - We looked at animation and learned about stop motion. We created our own simple flipbooks to learn more about how animations can be created.
Please continue to practise the Year 1 and 2 Common Exception Words - both reading and spelling!
Please practice learning the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables as later this half term we will be having times table tests on these.
Other Tasks
Times Table Test
Please practise the division facts for the 3 times table, ready for a test on Friday.
Handwriting
Please continue to practise the handwriting booklets.
I have also sent home some common exception word handwriting sheets to practise.
Comprehension
A practise 2017 SATS reading paper.
We have noticed that fewer children seem to be reading regularly recently. Please could we ask that you read at home with your child as often as possible. The more they read, they more confident they will get. Reading is such an important skill for accessing the whole of the curriculum, including our special SATS work we will complete during May.

During the month of May is the window for Year 2 SATS. We will be spreading these out across May but please make sure that we are aware of any extended absences in good time so we can make any adaptations for individual children.
There are four mandatory SATS papers: Maths Arithmetic, Maths Reasoning, English Reading Papers 1 and 2. There are also two optional papers: Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation. It is likely that we will do these optional papers as well.
I will send home a small selection of practise papers for you to prepare your children, if this is helpful.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mr Whetnall and Mrs Bowdell
