Welcome back Year 1! It has been lovely having everyone back together again this week…we have missed our little family all being in. The children have coped really well this week, remembering our old routines (just about) and getting back into the swing of being back at school. t has been a big change for all of us, and not doubt they will be tired today, but they have worked very hard and it is lovely to have everyone together again. A super week!
We have been busy this week…so I thought I would share a couple of photos with you all. Some are from World Book Day from the children who we in school and the others are of our planting. All the children who have been at home during lockdown had the chance to plant a bean seed this week and some of the seeds that were planted a few weeks ago have started to sprout.
This week we have been learning…..
English - our classroom has ben taken over by dragons!! All of our work for the next few weeks will be based on a story called The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward. It is a beautiful story of a lonely little boy who can see dragons….we seem to have quite a few in our classroom this week too! We have been using prepositions and conjunctions in our own writing to describe where the dragons are and why they might be hiding! great fun. We are also working hard on our phonic knowledge.
Maths- we have continued with our addition and subtraction focus, picking up the making 10 theme from the lockdown work. This has proved a little tricky for some, but we are making good progress and the children are doing really well with their number bond facts.
RE - our focus is on Following Jesus and this week we have learnt about hw Jesus chose His disciples and their names. We have also thought about what we look for in a friend and how we can be a good friend too. We are also continuing to choose a Lenten Challenge each day to add to our challenge board, things like helping to lay the table, to giving a smile, to tidying away our toys. Hopefully you can she the children meeting these challenges at home!
Science - this half term is all about Seasonal Change and this week we focused on the trees and what they look like in each season, along with which months are in each season.
Topic - we continued with our toy focus, this week drawing and writing about our favourite toys and then looking for similarities and differences between toys in the early 20th century and now.
All the children have been working hard this week, but these are the children that we are particularly celebrating……
Golden Award - Neaveh for beautiful manners and showing that she is a real disciple of Christ through her treatment of others
Writing Award - Laura for superb writing on our Dragon topic, using conjunctions and prepositions in her independent writing.
Maths Award — Emily for excellent work on addition and subtraction and explaining her thinking.
Many congratulations to Martha who won the Year 1 bookmark competition…..and then was chosen by Father Jim as the Key Stage 1 winner too!!! We are so proud of you Martha - your book mark is just beautiful. Martha has received a certificate, a book token and her bookmark will be made for the other children in Year 1 to have one too. Well done Martha, we are so proud of you.
Thank-you so much for continuing to respect Social Distancing measures at drop off and pick up times and wearing your masks. These measures are so important to ensure everyone’s safety at school and to ensure that our Year 1 bubble remains open to all. Can I please stress the importance of the one way system at pick up time - IN on the Common Edge Road entrance and OUT down the drive onto Thornhhill Close. Many thanks.
Things to remember……
PE continues to be on Monday and Friday - no earrings on these days please
Bring your school water bottle each day
Reading books will be changed on your child’s reading day - we will only be able to send home a basket book each week - Guided Reading books will remain in school. We still have to quarantine books for 72 hours before they are sent home to anyone else. This limits the number of books we have to send home. Please sign your child’s reading record when they read at home.
Please keep your child at home if they are unwell - we must all play our part to keep the bubble safe.
And finally……we have had a lovely week and I am proud of the way the children have coped. They are my little super stars!! Have a lovely weekend….stay safe. Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins
