Today, Friday 19th March, marks the Feast of St Joseph. In a new Apostolic Letter entitled Patris corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows. The Holy Father wrote Patris corde against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, which, he says, has helped us see more clearly the importance of “ordinary” people who, though far from the limelight, exercise patience and offer hope every day. In this, they resemble Saint Joseph, “the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence,” who nonetheless played “an incomparable role in the history of salvation.” In this way, let us all celebrate the ‘ordinary’ in our lives and find joy in the simple pleasure of serving God.
This week we have been learning….
English - we have continued with our unit of work based on The Dragon Machine, with the children writing some amazing pieces of work based on the main character of George. The children have used vocabulary and phrases from the story in their own writing and have shown a super understanding of capital letters, full stops and adjectives to make their writing shine. w have also continued to focus on our phonics skills, spelling the common exception words correctly and practicing our handwriting.
Maths - this week we have focused on making 10 in our subtraction work - in a two digit subtraction, subtracting the ones to get back to ten and then the rest of the number after that. so 16 - 8 = we would do 16-6 =10 and then 10-2=8. This has proved a little tricky, but we are making progress. We have also looked at subtraction word problems too.
RE - this week our focus has been the story of Jesus choosing his disciples and the miraculous catch of fish. We have listened to this story, read this story, written about it and looked at some art work showing it too! We know this story really well now.
Science - we continued with our work on Seasonal Changes, observing the weather and this week we focused on different seasonal photographs and the different weather we could see.
History - in our Toys topic this week we looked at how toys have changed and the materials that toys are now made of compared with what they were made of. we looked carefully at a selection of toys in class and found that a lot of these toys were made form plastic.
We are very proud of all of the children this week, but these are the children we have chosen to celebrate…
Golden Award - Leo for settling back into school well and working very hard all week.
Writing Award - Eleena for superb independent writing about George and where he saw the dragons - and amazing handwriting
Maths Award- William for working very hard at using a number line successfully to answer addition and subtraction questions.
Thank-you so much for continuing to respect Social Distancing measures at drop off and pick up times and wearing your masks. These measures are so important to ensure everyone’s safety at school and to ensure that our Year 1 bubble remains open to all. Can I please stress the importance of the one way system at pick up time - IN on the Common Edge Road entrance and OUT down the drive onto Thornhhill Close. Many thanks.
