The Epiphany
We returned to school on the Feast of the Epiphany. On Tuesday, in RE, we revisited the story of the Epiphany and explored what this special event means for Christians. We discussed how this was the first time God revealed himself (in the form of Jesus, His Son) to humankind. We also looked at the symbolism of the three gifts and how they show us that Jesus is a King, God and Saviour! The class then reflected on what three gifts they would like to offer to Jesus, our Saviour. We ended the lesson by creating a freeze frame of the Epiphany in smaller groups...
This Week's Learning
In Maths this week the focus was on decimals. We have been multiplying and dividing decimals by integers and looking at decimal/fraction equivalents.
In English we planned our guided write for our Classic Fiction unit and even made a start on our guided write. We are re-writing the Wizard of Oz but a shortened version, with certain parts of it innovated to make it our own. We changed the natural disaster at the beginning as well as the character that we meet and the dilemma they encounter. Next week, once our guided write is complete, the class will then plan and write their own version.
In PE with me this week we started our dance unit. We are using the music 'Starman' by David Bowie to create a dance. This dance will be compiled of whole class dance routines, partner routines and individual routines. We have used the theme of the music to inspire our dance moves and in this lesson we made a start by creating our whole class introduction, which we perform in unison.
In Science we made our last observations on on mould investigation. The piece of moist bread was covered in mould!! Whereas, the refrigerated piece had just one small patch of mould and the dry bread at room temp. had none at all! We used our observations to write a scientific explanation about why this was the case.
In Computing this week we used the laptops to create a PowerPoint presentation on Bletchley Park. We know this was a place of great significance during WW2, where they worked to decipher codes used by the Axis Power. Next week, each group will present their presentations to the rest of the class.

Notices
- PE days are Wednesdays and Thursday this half term.
- Reading books - Year 6 completed their STAR Reading test on Tuesday and have their new ZPDs. Quite a few children have stayed on the same ZPD as before Christmas. I would really be hoping to see each child moving up the ZPDs with each new test they do. Please do keep up with home reading as this will help to see that progress with each test taken. We do want the children to challenge themselves with their home readers too, so please do let me know if you ever think the book they are reading at home is perhaps not challenging enough.
- Homework- Please find details on this week’s homework here. If your child very finds any of the homework challenging, please remind them to mention it to me in school and we can go over it together. I am still using Learning by Questions as the Maths and English online resource and spellings this week have been taken from the Read, Write, Inc Spelling scheme that we use in class, rather than the Year 5/6 spelling list.
- Contact information- We no longer access the year group email (year6@…) If you need to contact me for any reason, and cannot catch me at the door, feel free to either pop an email to the admin address (with Year 6 in the subject box) or give the school a ring.
