In RE this week we focused on the purpose of the second account of creation, from Genesis. We used Pope Francis' words from Laudato Si to support our explanations that the creation story is there to reveal the truth about why God created the world and to show us what our relationship should be like with God, each other and the world around us. This led us to relect on Pope Francis' plea for us to be stewards of His creation and how can we play a part in protecting our earth.
Here is what we have been up to this week…
In Maths we focused on long division and the order of operations. We were using BIDMAS (brackets, indices, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction) to help us to undertand what order we need to complete mixed calculations in-I was so impressed with how quickly the class picked this up!
In English we did a shared write biography on Usain Bolt. I was so pleased with the contributions from the class and together we managed to write a high-quality biogrpahy. I will give each child personal feedback on this piece of writing and how to uplevel and make improvements. After the editing process, they will then have a great example of biography wriitng in their books that they can use to write their independent one. Everyone has already chosen their person and started to plan this!
In History our focus this lesson was on what we can learn about women's lives from looking at some 1911 censuses. This then led us to look at the suffragette movement and the 1911 boycott, when many women refused to take part in the cenus as they did not have the right to vote. In small groups, the class then ordered a timeline of events around the suffragette movement and wrote a speech to deliver to a younger year group all about the movement from women to get the right to vote.
In Science we studied two processes: osmosis and diffusion. This is how our bodies absorb and transfer nutrients and water around our bodies via our blood. We then did an investigation to explain the process of osmosis, using gummy bears. We place three gummy bears in different solutions (tap water, salt water and sugar water) and left them over night to see which absorbed the most least water. Next week, we will write up our conclusions and findings.

Water bottles-these need to be filled and brought in each day and taken home to be cleaned at the end of each day. Each child in the class was provided with a school water bottle-please can you ensure these are the bottles that are brought in daily and not their own water bottle from home.
-
Reading books - we have now completed our STAR Reading tests and each child has been given their ZPD range. I have mentioned to the children that I would like them to be challenged by their home reading books, so to focus on the upper end of their ZPD range. If they do find any of these books too tricky and it takes away the pleasure, they just need to tell me and we will find a more suited text.
-
Homework- Please find details on this week’s homework here. If your child very finds any of the homework challenging, please remind them to mention it to me in school and we can go over it together.
-
Contact information- We no longer access the year group email (year6@…) If you need to contact me for any reason, and cannot catch me at the door, feel free to either pop an email to the admin address (with Year 6 in the subject box) or give the school a ring.

At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters.
Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.
This month’s online safety guide gives helpful advice about…
What Parents & Educators Need to Know about FC26. This online safety guide explores EA FC 26 – the latest edition of the immensely popular football game. It flags potential risks, including in-game purchases, scams, and exposure to strangers via voice chat.
We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all. Thank you.
