Good afternoon everyone,
This week we have continued to focus on the Holy Spirit as we have begun to learn about the early Christian communities. We learned that without Jesus’ gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples would not have developed the confidence or talents to go out into their communities and teach people about God and Jesus. We discussed how we receive the Holy Spirit during our baptism and that this washes away our sins and prepares us for a life with God. We learned that the Holy Spirit helps us to make choices and guides our actions and gives us the confidence and bravery to do great things and make the right choices.
English - This week we have been exploring information texts, specifically non-chronological reports, through a text about toucans. We have identifed interesting vocabulary and used semantic mapping, dictionaries and thesaurus’ to build up our knowledge of definitions, word classes and synonyms. We have written letters to Grandad to share facts about other jungle animals and have explored er and est suffixes to create wonderful comparative sentences.
Maths - In Maths we have had a week of tricky learning as we have looked at mixed numbers where we have a combination of a whole number and a part split into a fraction. We have learned how we can represent these with pictures, how different combinations go together and how we can add mixed numbers together.
Science - In Science we began our materials topic by exploring the various man made and natural materials we find in our world. We learned about how different man made materials are made and began to think about the properties materials have which makes them suitable for specific jobs.
RE - We explored the importance of the Holy Spirit and thought about how it helps us and other Christians.
Geography - We began our new unit all about Australia by looking at the structure, key states and territories and major cities you would find in Australia.
PE - In our first PE lesson, we developed our athletics skills by engaging in relay races. We also practised our Sports Day activities.
Art - We created aboriginal dot paintings.
Please continue to practise the Year 1 and 2 Common Exception Words - both reading and spelling!
Please practice learning the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables as later this half term we will be having times table tests on these.
Other Tasks
Spelling
Practise the ‘j’ sound spelt either g, ge or dge.
Complete the dots and dashes sheet for the spelling words. When one letter makes one sound (like a), put a dot under the letter, when more than one letter makes one sound (like sh or le) put a line under the letters. Put a loop for any split digraph (ae, o_e, etc) and count this as one sound. Afterwards, add all the dots, dashes and loops together and write the number in the small box. E.g. badge would have the sounds b - a - dge so you would write 3 as there are 3 sounds.
Maths
Count in fractions to find the whole worksheets.
Golden Award - Erin - For showing great kindness and compassion in helping a child in class who was upset.
Writing Award - Elsie - for wonderfully adventurous descriptive sentences using er and est suffixes.
