Good afternoon everyone,
I hope we all enjoyed the Coronation celebrations last weekend. During this event, King Charles III spoke a lot about how his role is to serve others. This connects nicely to what we have learned during the Eastertide period about Jesus. During the Last Supper, Jesus washed his disciples feet. He did this to prove that nobody is too good to serve someone else. Jesus is a King but He serves His people. Jesus asks us to do the same. After Jesus’s resurrection, He forgives Peter for denying Him three times by asking “do you love me?” and instructing Peter to “feed my sheep.” Jesus was giving Peter a very important job: to teach others how to follow Jesus and how to be like Him. We too are called to be like Jesus and act how He would want us to behave. This can be very difficult but we persevere every day.
This week we begun our ‘special work’ in groups in the Library. Because of this, we have had a big focus on revision, handwriting and our arithmetic skills in lieu of our normal week.
English - This week we have focused upon powerful verbs. We have created a bank of powerful verbs which make our writing much more interesting and have worked hard to edit and improve writing using our writer’s knowledge. We have also begun to plan our own return narratives which we will hopefully begin to write when our SATS work is completed.
Maths - In Maths we have had a revision week. We have looked at mental arithmetic within 20, explored missing number problems, solved a range of fractions problems and have revisited telling the time in 15 and 5 minute intervals. We have also explored the properties of 3D shapes.
Science - We observed and recorded the growth of our seed and bulbs that we planted earlier this half term. We also set up an experiment to see if we could grow a bean plant without soil.
Computing - We used J2E to create our own stop motion animations and focused on how we can create flashing effects by using onion skinning tools.
PE - In our first PE lesson, we practised striking a ball with a racket and began to develop rounders-based games. In our second lesson, we focused on our fundamental movement skills of overarm throw, jumping and skipping.
Art - We have continued our work upon The Snail by Henri Matisse and have finished our own snail collages and began to plan our own collage animal.
Please continue to practise the Year 1 and 2 Common Exception Words - both reading and spelling!
Please practice learning the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables as later this half term we will be having times table tests on these.
Other Tasks
Spelling - Practise making -er and -est words using the rules in the speech bubbles. We will have a test on 12 of the words that can be created next week.
WE HAVE NOTICED THAT SEVERAL CHILDREN SEEM TO HAVE STOPPED READING AT HOME. PLEASE CONTINUE READING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THE BRAIN IS A MUSCLE AND, JUST LIKE OTHER MUSCLES, IT NEEDS TO BE WORKED REGULARLY TO MAKE SURE IT STAYS AT ITS STRONGEST. THANK YOU!
We have noticed that fewer children seem to be reading regularly recently. Please could we ask that you read at home with your child as often as possible. The more they read, they more confident they will get. Reading is such an important skill for accessing the whole of the curriculum, including our special SATS work we will complete during May.
Golden Award - Frazer - for working hard to be a kind, supportive friend.
Writing Award - Eddie - for his excellent use of adventurous language.
Maths Award - Archer - for great Maths SATS work.
Discipleship Award -
This week, every child in class completed their first reading SATS paper, as well as their maths arithmetic paper. They have all worked so hard and you can be very proud of them! Please continue to practise reading and times tables to ensure your child is in the best position they possibly can be for our second reading and maths papers next week. Thanks!
Have a lovely weekend,
Mr Whetnall and Mrs Bowdell
