Good afternoon everyone,
Year 2 have been focusing our thoughts on Lent again this week. We have been thinking about the ash cross we received last week and how this is a sign of our sorrow and our commitment to become closer to God. We have discussed the ways in which we can do this and how doing something very small, like helping a friend, brings us closer to God and Jesus. We have been trying to put this into action as we go about our day in school.
This Week…
In English we have been preparing for some letter writing on the topic of Florence Nightingale. We have collected together some information about Florence Nightingale’s life and put this into a timeline to understand which key events occured before, during and after the Crimean War. We have identified the features of an informal letter and found these in some examples. We have also been looking at using some suffixes to improve our writing (-ness, -ment, -er and -est).
In Maths, we have started our work on multiplication. We have discussed equal groups and how adding these together repeatedly is what multiplication is all about. We have focused upon the relationship between the x symbol and the + symbol and have used these to solve problems.
In RE, we have identified some of the signs and symbols of Lent and what they remind us of. We have written descriptions about their importance and drawn pictures of some of the symbols. We have also looked at important objects in the church and discussed their meaning and importance to us as Catholics.
In Science, we finished writing our non-chronological reports about world habitats. We explained climates, conditions and described how some animals and plants are adapted to living in a desert, rainforest or ocean habitat.
In Geography, we looked at the various ways in which islands are formed and wrote some explanations to describe this process, using our scientific and geographical vocabulary.
In PE, we continued our work on gymnastics by using apparatus to balance and jump and we also continued to develop our net/ball skills.
World Book Day
Just to remind you all that World Book Day takes place in school on the 25th March.
Certificates and Trophies
It is lovely to see your wonderful trophies and certificates for your hard work in your exta-curricular activities. As our celebration assembly in class in on Friday, please limit bringing these in until Friday so we can properly celebrate the children’s achivements.
Invitations
Please could we ask that party invitations are not brought into school to hand out. We are limited in our time and work right up until the final bell and so finding time in the day to hand these out is very difficult. It can also be upsetting for any children who cannot be invited to a party, for whatever reason.
We ask that, instead, any invites are handed out either in the morning before school or after picking up your child at the end of the day. Any that cannot be handed out due to alternate collection/drop off arrangements can be brought in to give out, so long as all children have been invited.
Thank you for your understanding.
Illness
We ask that you maintain your awareness of illness around school. We have increasing cases of chicken pox and scarlet fever. These can make children quite poorly so we ask that you keep your child at home if you see any symptoms of these illnesses.
We also ask for your continued support as we protect our school and community from Covid-19. Although government guidance to isolate if testing positive for Covid-19 has been dropped, we are still asking parents to test and isolate if their children do test positive. This is to keep all children and adults as safer as possible.
SCARLET FEVER SYMPTOMS
A main symptom of scarlet fever is a rash of small, raised spots which feels like sandpaper. You may have flu-like symptoms before the rash appears.
The first signs of scarlet fever can be flu-like symptoms, including a high temperature, a sore throat and swollen neck glands (a large lump on the side of your neck).
A rash appears 12 to 48 hours later. It looks looks like small, raised bumps and starts on the chest and tummy, then spreads. The rash makes your skin feel rough, like sandpaper.
On white skin the rash looks pink or red. It may be harder to see on brown and black skin, but you can still feel it.
A white coating also appears on the tongue. This peels, leaving the tongue red, swollen and covered in little bumps (called "strawberry tongue").
The rash does not appear on the face, but the cheeks can look red. The redness may be harder to see on brown and black skin..
The symptoms are the same for children and adults, although scarlet fever is less common in adults.
IF YOUR CHILD HAS THESE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS - PLEASE SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE.
