We have spent a lot of time this week talking about the miracles of God and what is possible. We have also talked about the small miracles that we can perform - and do - each and every day. With God, all things are possible - not a bad moto to live by.
English - we have continued on with our RWI lessons. During these sessions we all focus on phonics, reading, spelling and sentence development. We have also been working on our pre-cursive handwriting in which we focus on how to write our letters, starting on the line. We are continuing to work hard on our common exception words, reading them in class every day!
Maths - this week has been all about grouping and counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Lots of counting this week and practical work to help the children to see how a large number can be slip into smaller groups. Please keep practicing counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. .
RE - this week has been all about the signs and symbols of the Jewish faith, what they are and what they represent.
Art - this week the children have continued painted their clay animals from last week, lots of fun had by all.
A few things had been missed this week due to our trip and watching the Year 6 performance on Wednesday…..it’s a busy time of year!
Many congratulations to this week’s winners…
Golden Award - Karson for super application of his sculpture Art learning to or beach sculptures on Tuesday. I loved the sculptures you made Karson and how absorbed you were in your work.
Written Award - Germaine for super writing about the signs and symbols of the Jewish religion.
Maths Award - Arlo for super counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and for knowing how made groups there were in problem questions.
PE will be on Monday and Friday so please send the children into class in the PE kits on those days. No earrings can be worn for PE so please ensure that they are taken out at home.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle this week. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 1 have white tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Gilheaney and Miss Simons and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Miss Simons and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it create fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bag - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
Homework Expectations - please see the Homework page for what I expect the children to do at home…..don’t worry, it’s mainly just reading!! Yr1 Homework — Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School (squarespace.com)
Please could all of the children bring in a named, strong, bag for life to bring home their books next week. Many thanks.
Can all children bring their reading books and reading records into school on MONDAY where they will be collected in. Reading books will not be sent home next week. Many thanks.

Monday 15th July - moving up afternoon!
Friday 19th July - School Closes for the Summer Holidays - normal finishing time!
Well, what a morning we had!! I spent the whole of last weekend watching the weather forecasts and going from being hopeful, to worrying, to back to being hopeful again….unfortunately it was just not our day in the end. Despite it being glorious, we went to the beach on Tuesday in the driving rain!! However, once we arrived we did get a brief respite, which allowed the children to make their Andy Goldsworthy inspired sculptures using sticks, stones and shells that they found on the beach and make some lovely sandcastles. I was delighted with the children’s behaviour and their resilience in the face of disappointing weather and having to come back to school early. We cam e back to school in time to have our picnic lunches in the dry, get warm again and then we had a lovely free play afternoon. Not quite the day we had planned, but I think the ice lollies made up for it in the end! A great day Year 1 - you all made me very proud!
And finally….have a lovely weekend. Mrs Hollinghurst, Miss Simons and all the Year 1 team.
A few photos of our week….
