We have been talking a great deal this week about the forgiveness of sins and how we must all repent and ask for forgiveness, as we all make mistakes. It is important that the children recognise we all make mistakes, but that these can be put right through saying sorry, meaning it and trying to be better. Throughout Lent all of Year 1 are trying to be better - this is the challenge we have set ourselves and I hope tat you can see this in your own child. We are working particularly on our friendship skills and trying to make things right ourselves - this is hard as the children often think that they make things better by telling me - but I am encouraging the children to speak to each other when things go wrong, to see if they can reach a solution themselves. This is a work-in-progress, but we are all trying to be ‘‘better’.
English - we have continued on with our RWI lessons. During these sessions we all focus on phonics, reading, spelling and sentence development. We have also been working on our pre-cursive handwriting in which we focus on how to write our letters, starting on the line. We are continuing to work hard on our common exception words, reading them in class every day!
Maths - this week we have been comparing 2 two-digit numbers using the greater than, less than and equal to signs. We have also been ordering numbers from greatest to smallest and smallest to greatnest.
RE - this week has been all Jesus and the miraculous catch of fish. We have listened to this story, made our own fish to catch in a net and have written our own recounts of this story.
ICT - this week we started our new topic all about Digital imagery - this week we have planned our own story boards to tell a story through photographs.
Topic - this half term our topic theme is History focusing on Castles and Queens. This week we learnt more about Queen Victoria and her very long reign. We also learnt a little about what life was like in Victorian Britain.
Art - this week the children have been creating their Spring trees in preparation for our Spring board….all we need now is some spring weather!
A busy week….we had our VR experience on Wednesday off this week and we had an amazing time learning about Wild Animals! The children were fabulous, recalling all that we have previously learnt about this topic and sharing some of their own knowledge too. A great time was had by all. Thank-you so much for your donations to help fund this visit.
Many congratulations to this week’s winners…

This Lent, Our Lady of the Assumption is looking to fundraise for both CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) in its campaign to ‘Walk Against Hunger’. We will make it our own ‘Pilgrimage’ during Lent knowing that each little step we take will make a BIG difference. Each class will set its own Lenten walking target and in Year 1 we have chosen to do our walk around the school grounds. Year 1 will set out daily during the last two weeks of term to do a full circuit of the school grounds, thinking about those less fortunate then us with each step that we take. We will do this walk each day for the last two weeks of the school term. (Start date for Yr 1 27th March - 6th April)
As a school are asking parents/families to sponsor their child/children to undertake their special ‘Pilgrimage Walk’. Once we’ve completed our walk, we will add our kilometres to CAFOD’s ‘ Walk Against Hunger Totaliser’. The aim nationally is 40,000 km! This is a massive challenge, but by joining together we can all help stamp out hunger one step at a time. The children brought their their sponsor forms home on FRIDAY 3RD MARCH and we asking parents to send in the donations through PARENT PAY (by the end of this term, 6th April) and NOT send the money into school with your child. Please follow the PARENT PAY link you have been sent to set up your account - if you have any problems with this, please contact the school office. Please note you are sponsoring your child for the WHOLE challenge, not each individual, daily walk! Thank you for your support.
Throughout Lent we would like to invite all children and families to join us in the school hall for a short Lenten reflection led by Father Frank.
This will be held once every week at 8:30am and will begin from Tuesday 7th March, continuing until Tuesday 28th March.
We do hope you can join us for this opportunity to gather as a faith community to reflect on the true value and meaning of Lent.
Friday 10th March marked the start of British Science week - today Year 1 took part in an online Science Live Lesson to kick start our week. Next week we will have Science each afternoon, covering a range of different topics, not just our class focus. Our aim is to truly bring Science alive and to show the children the beauty of this subject. See next week’s blog for what we have been up to!
