During this period of Lent we are think every day about how we can ‘walk towards’ Jesus. We have been thinking carefully about our actions, how we speak to others, how we treat other people and how we can always try to do our best. We are also thinking about prayer and throughout Lent Year 1 are learning the words of the Lord’s prayer and thinking about what this prayer means. We are Jesus’ disciples and we His hands and feet on Earth. Our Lent Promises….
English - we have continued on with our RWI lessons. During these sessions we all focus on phonics, reading, spelling and sentence development. We have also been working on our pre-cursive handwriting in which we focus on how to write our letters, starting on the line. We are continuing to work hard on our common exception words, reading them in class every day!
Maths - this week we have been counting on using own number lines and ten frames to show how many more. We have started to look at how calculations will have the same whole if the ones numbers are the same.
The rest of the week has been all about Science!! This week we have focused on Connections for the theme of Science week and we have planted seeds, made posters about the connections between animals and their young, looked at the season of Spring and features of the season, made predictions about what happen when we mix colours, investigated absorbent materials and investigated whether the people with the largest hands can throw the furthest!! What a busy week we have had. It has been lovely to just focus on one subject for the week….I hope the children have enjoyed themselves and made some good connections!! (We did take a little break on Wednesday for some craft activities!)
Our Science Week….

This Lent, Our Lady of the Assumption is looking to fundraise for both CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) in its campaign to ‘Walk Against Hunger’. We will make it our own ‘Pilgrimage’ during Lent knowing that each little step we take will make a BIG difference. Each class will set its own Lenten walking target and in Year 1 we have chosen to do our walk around the school grounds. Year 1 will set out daily during the last two weeks of term to do a full circuit of the school grounds, thinking about those less fortunate then us with each step that we take. We will do this walk each day for the last two weeks of the school term. (Start date for Yr 1 27th March - 6th April)
As a school are asking parents/families to sponsor their child/children to undertake their special ‘Pilgrimage Walk’. Once we’ve completed our walk, we will add our kilometres to CAFOD’s ‘ Walk Against Hunger Totaliser’. The aim nationally is 40,000 km! This is a massive challenge, but by joining together we can all help stamp out hunger one step at a time. The children brought their their sponsor forms home on FRIDAY 3RD MARCH and we asking parents to send in the donations through PARENT PAY (by the end of this term, 6th April) and NOT send the money into school with your child. Please follow the PARENT PAY link you have been sent to set up your account - if you have any problems with this, please contact the school office. Please note you are sponsoring your child for the WHOLE challenge, not each individual, daily walk! Thank you for your support.
Throughout Lent we would like to invite all children and families to join us in the school hall for a short Lenten reflection led by Father Frank.
This will be held once every week at 8:30am and will begin from Tuesday 7th March, continuing until Tuesday 28th March.
We do hope you can join us for this opportunity to gather as a faith community to reflect on the true value and meaning of Lent.
