We have talked about the wonderful world that God created for us to live in this week and how He was pleased with what He had done. We have looked at how we now have to care for God’s world and discussed the ways in which we can do this. We have had some great chats and Year 1 are very knowledgeable and caring about the world around them. In our worship this week we have been focusing on God’s love and care for us and the knowledge that He is always with us and will always love us - no matter what.
English - this week we have been working on the set 2 RWI sounds and have been working on holding a sentence in our head and then independently writing it down.
Maths - this week we have been working on one more and one less and how many more and fewer counters we have then our partner. The use of the word fewer is important when comparing objects, we use less when comparing number. We have practiced our sentences with our partner before applying this understanding to our independent work.
RE - we have continued our new topic on Creation by looking at all the ways God has shown through the Creation story how He loves us. We have also made love posters to show how we know that God loves us - these are beautiful and contain all the children favourite things.
History - we have continued on topic on Our Family by investigating old style toys, the materials they are made from, how we play with them and whether we think they are fun, or not! This week we looked at when certain toys were popular, introducing the term decade and then ordering decades and the toys that came out then.
Science - this week we investigated our sense of sight and touch. We did this through observation drawing of conkers and their cases. The children enjoyed touching these things - especially the spiky casings!! We also looked for the similarities and differences between us all.
Computing - this week we learnt how to safety turn on, log into, log out and switch off our laptops and then investigated to programme Sketchpad.
Art - the children investigated the work of Jasper Johns and made their own version of his number work using water colour paints.
Golden Award - Hosanna for demonstrating a super attitude to learning and a can do attitude to learning her letters and sounds. In a short spaces of time you have made such good progress. Keep up the hard work.
Writing Award - Amelia for supper independent writing in RWI, applying the skills learnt to your own sentences. We are very impressed!
Maths Award - Arlo for excellent work this week on one more, one less, more and fewer - super use of mathematical language and explaining why and why not.
PE will be on Monday and Friday so please send the children into class in the PE kits on those days. No earrings can be worn for PE so please ensure that they are taken out at home.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle this week. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 1 have white tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Veasey and Mrs Connolly and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Veasey and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it create fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bag - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
Homework Expectations - please see the Homework page for what I expect the children to do at home…..don’t worry, it’s mainly just reading!! Yr1 Homework — Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School (squarespace.com)
This year we are collecting tinned food for the local food bank. We are asking each child to bring in one tin for our collection. Please donate, if you can, for this very worthy cause. The children can bring their tins into class, where we have a donation box. Many thanks to those who have donated already.
You will have received notification about Parent/Teacher meetings on MONDAY 16th OCTOBER - please make sure you follow the link to make an appointment. This is an important meeting to discuss how your child has settled into Year 1, the progress they are making and what you can do to support them at home. I look forward to seeing you all on this date. Thank-you
At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters.
Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.
This month’s online safety guides give helpful advice about…
Among Us: a futuristic murder mystery that’s found an enthusiastic audience of young gamers.
We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all.
I love to share photos of your child’s learning on the website each week…but before I can do that I need your permission! Please check the letter that came home during the week and return the forms as soon as you can. I will not share any photos of your children until all those letters come back in. Many thanks.
And finally….have a lovely weekend….Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and all the Year 1 team
