We have been talking a lot about good thoughts and kind words this week in Year 1 as unfortunately we have had lots of falling out in class, along with ‘tail telling’. We are trying to use are words kindly to make people happy, rather than unkindly to get them into trouble. This is a work in progress, but we are trying to find the positives in our daily interactions with others, rather than the negatives. Please discuss with your child at home as the way we speak to others, as the way we behave towards others speaks volumes about us. Thank-you.
Many thanks for all the lovely Baptism photographs we have received - our board is looking lovely. If you haven’t sent in a picture yet, but your child has been Baptised - then it is not too late!
This week we have been learning….
English - we have continued with our RWI lessons, working in our groups on phonics, spelling, reading and independent writing. In class we continue to work on the spelling of the Common Exception words for Year 1, along with our pre-cursive handwriting, sentence construction and the use of pronouns and personal pronouns in our writing.
Maths - this week we have continued with our subtraction theme, looking at difference and how to use a number line to work out the difference between two numbers. We have also started to look at the language of subtraction word problems and how to structure our numerical calculation.
RE - this week we have continued our work on Baptism, thinking about the importance of the signs and symbols of the sacrament and writing about what each of them means.
Science - we continue with our Materials theme, looking at what an objects is, that material it is made out of and the properties of those materials along with an investigation to discover which objects will float and which will sink - great fun had by all!!
Topic - in our Geography topic we have been looking at where we live in relation to where the school is and could we find our locations on local maps. We have also continued to use the Bee Bots as part of our ICT mapping skills to programme a BeeBot to make its way round a map!
Art - this week the children continued with their mark making theme to create piece of work based on the story of the Three Little Pigs. They used different implements to make their marks.
Life Education - this morning we had a visit form the people at Coram Life Education who delivered a lesson all about the body, how to keep ourselves healthy and how to be a kind friend. We even had a visit from Harold the Giraffe! The children were great, answered all the questions they were asked brilliant and had a super time with Harold! Good fun was had by all.
These are our certificate winners for this week….
Golden Award - Nicholas for super answers about the heart during our ‘Life Education’ session this morning
Writing Award - Elsie for super independent writing in RWI and beautiful pre-cursive handwriting
Maths Award - Amara for a great explanation of how a stick of ten can be swapped for 10 ones - I was very impressed Amara!
As I mentioned last week, if your child is coming to school in trainers/shoes that have laces they MUST be able to tie them. Many of the children have lovely trainers for PE with laces which they are unable to tie themselves - even if you tie your child’s laces in a double knot, they will not stay tied all day. For PE this is really dangerous and is reliant on a member of staff noticing and being able to tie the laces before an accident occurs. This is also an issue at playtime - PLEASE ensure your child can tie their own shoe laces if they are wearing shoes with laces for school. Many thanks.
Unfortunately, we are very much still the grip of the covid pandemic. None of us want to see schools closing and remote learning back in place, so we must ALL play our part to keep one another safe. The new Omicron variant has symptoms that are very similar to the common cold - if your child is showing any cold symptoms PLEASE test them for covid using a lateral flow test and if in any doubt, please go for a PCR. I know the tests are hard to come by, but we must all do what we can to ensure this does not spread through school - we all know how quickly germs spread amongst small children and although they might not be badly affected, those around them may well be. Many of Year 1 have very bad/heavy cold at the moment - have you checked these symptoms?
It may also be worth thinking about testing your child weekly EVEN if they DON’T have symptoms to enable us to ensure this doesn’t spread through our class and school.
Many, many thanks for your continued support on this issue.
If your child is isolating from school due to Covid 19 and they are well enough to work, you can find their work on the HOME LEARNING page of the Year 1 section of the website. I have been using Oak Academy units as they all contain a little video and a task for the children to complete that does not require you to print anything - your child just needs a piece of paper and a pencil!! And maybe some colours for the art activities! https://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-home-learning
Please DO NOT send the work into school with your child on their return, but send photos of it through Class Dojo and add work to your child’s profile. You will each get an invite to this through the email you gave to school when your child was in Reception.
If your child is off school, please inform the office and NOT the Year 1 email or Class Dojo. Many thanks
Any questions or queries either catch me or Mrs Veasey at the gate or email using year1@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk.
Things to note…
Children should have their water bottles each day. Water bottles must be taken home and washed daily. Children can only have plain water in their bottles, not juice or flavoured water.
PE is Monday and Friday
Earrings cannot be worn for PE
Earrings should only be small, plain, gold or silver studs
Children should have long hair tied back for school
School bags should just be the red book bags you were given in Reception
Please keep reading folders in the children’s school bags so that they have them on the right day - many thanks.
