This week we have been talking about Baptism and how it is the first step in our journey with Jesus. Thank-you to those of you who have already sent in a photo of your child’s Baptism - please continue to do so by either sending in a picture with your child or emailing it to year1@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk. This week we have watched a Baptism and looked for the signs and symbols of the sacrament - such as the white gown, the candle and the holy water. Next week we will think about the importance of these symbols.
This week we have been learning….
English - we continue to work hard in our RWI groups on phonics, reading, spelling and independent writing. In class we are working hard on our pre-cursive handwriting, sentence construction and the use of the personal pronoun I in sentence construction.
Maths - this wee has been all about subtraction. We have used our number line to help us subtract two small numbers and used the ‘jumps’ to help us find the difference between two numbers. We have looked carefully and the order of numbers in a subtraction calculation and the meaning of the equals sign (meaning balance, not ‘here is the answer’).
RE - this week has been all about Baptism - we have watched a Baptism and looked for the signs and symbols of the scarament. We have looked at the scarament as the first step in Belonging to the church family and how we all belong to family of God.
Science - this week work was all about the properties of materials - what they look like and what they feel like. We looked at how some materials suit certain jobs because of their properties.
Geography - this week we continued with our mapping unit, looking at how we could map out the contents of the classroom. Some children started to use the Bee Bots to plot their way around a map.
Art - this week the children were continuing with their mark marking skills through observational drawing and planning some shields for our new Castle role play area!
Many congratulations to our certificate winners this week….
Golden Award - Macie for drawing a super plan of our classroom.
Writer Award - Nicholas for beautiful handwriting and super independent sentences in RWI
Maths Award - George for super subtraction work finding difference.
SHOE LACES - if your child is wearing shoes for school, or trainers, that have shoe laces they MUST be able to tie them for themselves. We now have a number of children wearing shoes and trainers for school that have laces and they are not able to tie their laces. This is dangerous. Mrs Veasey and I do not always notice when shoes are untied, but even if we do, it is not always possible to stop an accident from happening - especially at playtime. The majority of my time in PE on Monday was spent re-tying trainer laces and NOT watching the whole class - this is also dangerous as someone could have an accident and I wouldn’t see it because I would be on the floor re-tying shoe laces. PLEASE do not send your child into school wearing shoes/trainers that have laces if they cannot tie them. (Shoving the laces in their shoes doesn’t count!) Many thanks for your help with this matter.
As you will be aware we have had a positive case of Covid 19 in Year 1 this week - PLEASE remain vigilant about the symptoms of the new strain and if in ANY doubt, please test your child or yourself. Please consider doing a weekly test with your child to ensure their cold symptoms are just a cold and not anything else, and help us to pick up any children who do not have any symptoms at all. Many thanks - we must all do what we can to keep each other safe.
If your child is isolating from school due to Covid 19 and they are well enough to work, you can find their work on the HOME LEARNING page of the Year 1 section of the website. I have using Oak Academy units as they all contain a little video and a task for the children to complete that does not require you to print anything - your child just needs a piece of paper and a pencil!! And maybe some colours for the art activities! https://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-home-learning
Please DO NOT send the work into school with your child on their return, but send photos of it through Class Dojo and add work to your child’s profile. You will each get an invite to this through the email you gave to school when your child was in Reception.
If your child is off school, please inform the office and NOT the Year 1 email or Class Dojo. Many thanks
Any questions or queries either catch me or Mrs Veasey at the gate or email using year1@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk.
Things to note…
