This week our focus has been on the Feast of the Ascension, which we celebrated yesterday. We have been taking a lot these last few weeks about Jesus appearing to the disciples and preparing them for the task ahead. Now that task is upon them - as it is us. We are now the vessel through which word of God will flow - and what a wonderful job the children are doing. They make me proud of them every day the way in which they strive to be good disciples of the Lord - well done Year 1.
This week we have been learning……
English - this week as been all about poetry…acrostic poems, senses poems and even riddle at the end of the week! We have based all of our poems on animals and the children have thought long and hard about the best way to describe their favourite animals. The finished work is super! We have also continued with our Common Exception word work, our handwriting and phonics work, along with our reading work. Busy, busy!!
Maths - this week we have been learning to count in 5’s. We have looked at the pattern this makes on our number square and the facts that all the numbers have a 5 or 0 in the ones position. We have counted these, coloured the pattern, used our number squares to find the missing number and explained why a number is or isn’t in the pattern. Please continue to work on this counting pattern at home, along with counting in 2’s which we did last week.
RE - this week has been all about the Feast of the Ascension. We have listened to the story, looked at art work of the event and even drawn our own images of this special day.
Science - this week we have continued with our work on Trees - evergreen and deciduous. The children have amazed me with their understanding of this topic and we have looked at naming some trees and identifying their leaves too .
History - this week we learnt more facts about Queen Victoria and the times that she lived in. The children were amazed at some of the things they didn’t have then!! We collected our favourite facts about Queen Victoria for our fact flower.
Art - this week we studied the artist Patrick Heron and used his work on sunsets to create our own work using either warm or cold colours. See the pictures below so some examples.
All the children are working hard, but these are the ones we are celebrating this week….
Golden Award - Stephen for working hard all week and for now coming into school and leaving with all the other children!
Writing Award - Sara for super Science responses regarding plants and trees.
Maths Awards - Eleena for great work counting in 5’s and applying the pattern to her work.
And last week’s awards were given to…..
Golden Award - William for super independent writing about Queen Victoria.
Writing Award - Florence for excellent work on her pre-cursive letter formation
Maths Award - Natalia for super counting in 2’s
Thank-you so much for continuing to respect Social Distancing measures at drop off and pick up times and wearing your masks. These measures are so important to ensure everyone’s safety at school and to ensure that our Year 1 bubble remains open to all. Can I please stress the importance of the one way system at pick up time - IN on the Common Edge Road entrance and OUT down the drive onto Thornhhill Close.
Please can you also ensure that your child stands with you at drop of time in the morning and is not running around the car park and in between the parked cars. Many thanks.
Dinner Times - please encourage your child to eat their dinner at a reasonable speed to ensure they get some playtime after.
Things to remember……
PE continues to be on Monday and Friday - no earrings on these days please
Bring your school water bottle each day
Reading books will be changed on your child’s reading day - we will only be able to send home a basket book each week - Guided Reading books will remain in school. We still have to quarantine books for 72 hours before they are sent home to anyone else. This limits the number of books we have to send home. Please sign your child’s reading record when they read at home.
Please keep your child at home if they are unwell - we must all play our part to keep the bubble safe.
School closes at 1.15pm for all children on Friday’s.
And finally, have a lovely weekend, stay safe…..Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins
