This week we have focused on the story of Noah’s Ark and the importance of the sign of the rainbow. The children are now used to seeing this sign in people’s windows and it has become a sign of hope to all over the past six months. We have refocused our attention on the rainbow as a sign from God and His promise to protect us and keep us from harm. During these most challenging of times we can do no more than to place our fears in His hands and have faith that He will keep us safe.
All of the children have worked so hard again this week - as a Year 1 team we are just blown away each week by these amazing children and how hard they all work. They are simply wonderful. It has been a tricky decision, but these are the children we are celebrating this week……
Golden Award - Sara for her amazing piece of art work producing a dragon based on the story of Fred the Dragon.
Writing Award - William for working so hard to keep all this writing on the line and trying to form all his letters correctly.
Maths Award - Stephen for super work on ordering numbers and ordinal numbers.
This week we have been learning…..
English - we have based all our work on the Judith Kerr story ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. We have worked hard to write our own versions of this story and have had some great titles; like ‘The Bear Who Came to Brunch’! We have focused on using finger spaces and capital letters correctly in our writing. In Phonics we have focused on ‘ur’ nurse with a nurse and ‘or’ shut the door, along with working on letter formation and writing each letter in our pre-cursive style.
Maths - this week we have looked at ordering numbers greatest to smallest or smallest to greatest. We have also started to look at ordinal numbers and how we can record position as a word and a digit, such as first and 1st. In Mental Maths we have looked at doubling and halving, as well as adding and subtracting from 10.
RE - this week we have written about the story of Noah’s Ark and have discussed the meaning of the rainbow and how it tells of God’s promise to us all.
Science - this week we looked for similarities and differences between the animal groups - such as finding things we as humans have in common with other mammals like cows, dogs and rabbits!
Topic - we continued with our focus on pictures from our local area and asked ourselves ‘what can I see?’
Art - this half term we have been focusing on painting and the work the children have produced has been amazing! This week we painted dragons to illustrate the story of Fred and the Dragon.

PLEASE CHECK THIS OUT FOR AN EDUCATION CITY ACTIVITY.
Education City is an online resource that I would use to set work in the event of another lockdown or your child being away from school for any length of time. Please have a go at the activities this weekend - password/usernames came home with the children yesterday and they are stuck in the front of the children’s reading records. Many thanks.
Other things to mention…
Thanks for the family photos - please continue to send these in, the board looks great
Please sign your child’s reading record each time they read so that they can collect stickers on their bookmark. We ask that children a minimum of three times a week.
PE - Monday and Wednesday. AFTER HALF TERM OUR PE DAYS CHANGE TO MONDAY AND FRIDAY. We will then have Music on a Wednesday with our new music teacher Miss Benson. Children CANNOT wear earrings for PE.
Don’t forget your child’s water bottle each day - thanks!
Please return any outstanding Data Forms to school as soon as you can - many thanks.
Please do not send your child into school if they are unwell or showing any signs of Covid 19 - we need to work together to keep each other safe. Many thanks for this.
And finally……..have a lovely weekend…..Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins
