This week we have been discussing the importance of the poppy and why we wear this little red flower at this time of year. I have been touched by the number of children who have brought in money to buy poppies and who are wearing them with pride. I hope you all have a chance to fall silent on Sunday to remember the sacrifice of the many, for the few.

All of the children have been working hard this week, but these are the pupils we have chosen to particularly celebrate this week….

Golden Award - Ronnie for being a super role model in Year 1 - lovely manners and a positive attitude towards all aspects of learning.

Writing Award - Henry for his super pre-cursive handwriting

Maths Award - Lily for fabulous part part whole work in number

This week we have been learning….

English - we have continued to work hard in our RWI groups this week, working on phonics, reading and independent writing. We are working hard on our pre-cursive handwriting too.

Maths - we have been focusing on part part whole this week - taking a number and looking at the ways in which the number can be split. We have used counters, part part whole diagrams and bead strings to help us picture these numbers; for example if 7 was the whole then 6+1 could be its parts, as could 5+2, or 4+3, or 2+5 etc…

RE - this week we focused on remembering and the importance of our role in being disciples of Jesus. We have discussed how we can be role models and do the right thing and how this shows others that we are following Jesus.

Science - in our senses work we focused on taste and touch this week.

Geography - in our topic week we focused on Blackpool this week, where it is in the country and what we can see when we visit this sea-side town. The children created some beautiful images of Blackpool in their partnerships!

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY - Year 1 will be joining forces with Year 2 for the Key Stage 1 nativity which will take place on TUESDAY 17TH DECEMBER AT 9.30AM AND 2.15PM ON THAT DATE ONLY. Both of these performances will be ticketed, due to space, and further information regarding this will be sent out in due course. The tickets are obviously free of charge, it is simply down to a space issue so that we can control in the number of people at each performance.

YOGA - starts TUESDAY 12TH NOVEMBER for 4 weeks. This means that PE will be on TUESDAY and FRIDAY for the next 4 weeks. Usual school uniforms on MONDAY please. Thank-you

REMINDERS - children CANNOT wear nail varnish or tattoos for school. Pease ensure these are removed before coming into school. Thank-you. Trainers - if children are wearing trainers with laces for PE - they MUST be able to tie their own laces. Reading records MUST be signed by an adult at home to show that your child has finished their book. Thank-you for your help with these matters.

Keep up the reading work at home, along with handwriting practice.

Have a lovely weekend……Mrs Hollinghurst and the Year 1 team
