This Sunday will mark the first Sunday in Advent, which symbolises Hope with the “Prophet’s Candle” reminding us that Jesus is coming. In Year 5 we have been learning about Advent and have thought about the special Advent promises they want to make to prepare themselves for the Nativity of Christ at Christmas. Advent is a time to consider how we can be of service to others and so all of their promises are linked to Jesus’ Commandment “Love one another as I have loved you.” . We have put these on display to remind us of our promises. Please ask your child to share their promise with you.
Over the next few weeks, until we break for Christmas, I have introduced a challenge to the class to encourage the children to work together in harmony over the advent season. The children are working as part of a team, chosen by them, to earn points for making the right choices, following our school values of CARE, LEARN and RESPECT, and for reading and completing their homework. The teams have got off to a good start and I would appreciate it if you could encourage your child to do their best for themselves and their team. Good luck Year 5!

Our learning this week…
In English we have read through a good example of a formal report and have summarised each paragraph and have identified the text structure.
In maths the children have been using rounding to estimate and check the answer to subtractions and additions.
In RE we have considered why God chose Noah, what our part in the covenant is and what the symbol God gave us to show his promise to never flood the world again.
In history the children are continuing to learn about the Ancient Greeks.
In PE the children are working with PE specialist Erin from Blackpool Football Club Community Trust. The focus of their lessons this half term is invasion games: Rugby.
Our Year 5 worship this week was led by James and Ronnie. Their worship was on the theme of Forgiveness and they shared one of Jesus’ most famous parables The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). The boys reminded Year 5 of how the Father is like God - always ready to forgive - and how the Sons’ are like us.
“For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ “ Luke 15:24

Dates for your diary…
8th December Coffee afternoon in the church hall . This is a follow up from the successful SEND afternoon and will focus on deciding what professional parents would like to hear from and areas that they need support in. Mrs Ormerod will speak about how to navigate the FYI directory and how APDR/ graduated response works in school. There will also be members of the Blackpool parent forum in attendance. They will also look at support around the cost of living.
Wednesday 20th December Christmas meal & Christmas jumper day Children are invited to wear their own clothes for the day, and this can include Christmas jumpers, dresses or accessories if they would like - but please don't buy anything especially. We would like to support Save The Children with the Christmas jumper day, and will add a voluntary contribution of £1 to Parentpay for donations to this charity nearer the time.
Have a great weekend everyone!
