Good afternoon everyone,
Welcome back to our final term of Year 2. We hope you had a lovely half term break.
This week we have spent some quiet time reflecting on the death of Pope Francis. We have engaged in prayer to thank him for his ministry and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
We have also celebrated Jesus’ resurrection and how this is good news for everyone in the world!
English - In English we have continued to explore Grandad’s Island, ready for our own return narrative next week. We have looked at grammar and vocabulary choices by the author and have considered their choices. We have also been creating question and exclamation sentences and have used adverbs to improve sentences.
Maths - In Maths we have continued our work on fractions. We have focused upon quarters and the various ways in which we can work out a quarter of a shape or amount. We have also begin to look at unit fractions.
Science - We checked on the progress of our seeds and bulbs and described the main parts of a plant and their function.
RE - In RE, we learned about Jesus appearing to his dcisciples following his resurrection.
Geography - We began our unit on Australia by learning about the states and territories that Australia is divided into.
PE - Our Wednesday PE focused on 20th Century playground games and our Friday PE focused upon Athletics practice.
Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Please continue to use TTRockstars to practise times tables.
Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.
Times Tables
Please revisit and practice the 4 times tables as we are still a little unsure of these.
Reading

Maths

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Gilheaney and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
Throughout May - Children will be undertaking SATS papers (informally). I still need to confirm details on how this is being managed.
Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School Run to Rome
We have now completed our laps for Rome in school. Your child should have brought home a slip with their number of laps on it.
We would ask parents to collect sponsorship from friends and family and then pay the total amount through your child’s parentpay account. This event will be added to parentpay account ‘Run to Rome for Cafod’ in order for proceeds to be sent directly to Cafod as we are now a cashless school. Please can all sponsorship forms be returned by Tuesday 22nd April 2025.
As a school, we are always looking for ways to improve children’s engagement with reading and this last half term, more children in Year 5 have been reading regularly as part of our Lent challenge, so during the Summer term, the whole school will be taking part in a reading challenge. Children will receive a golden ticket each time they read and get their reading diary signed three times. At the end of each half term, during our celebration assembly, we will draw a golden ticket from each class’s box, and one winner from each class will receive a reward. Please encourage your child to read regularly and bring in their signed reading diary so they can start collecting their golden tickets. Thank you for your support.
