Good afternoon everyone,
This week in Year 2 we have been thinking about being ready for Jesus’ return. We discussed how we need to try and put others needs before our own and try to do the right thing, even if others try to tell us it is wrong. Our prayer leaders also wrote a prayer around our worship theme:
English - This week we have continued to explore setting descriptions with a focus on using similes (with like/as) to compare something to something else, different sentence openers to make our writing more interesting and exclamation sentences (using what or how). We also applied these skills to plan our own Great Fire setting description which we will write next week.
Maths - In Maths we have been looked at arithmetic, particularly addition and subtraction. We have been exploring using bonds to 10 to find multiples of 10 bonds to 100, making number bonds to 100 using 100 squares, adding and subtracting 1s and adding and subtracting 10s.
Science - We learned about the basic needs of humans for survival and compared these to animals. noticing that many are the same. We learned, however, that humans have many additional needs which help them to be happy and healthy such as family, entertainment, respect and clothing.
RE - We painted our models of the Holy Trinity that we made with clay last week. We also began our work on advent by looking at some of the ways Christians prepare during advent and how this may be different from non-Christians.
Geography - We recapped the continents of the world and labelled them on different maps which encouraged us to think about their shape and features rather than just their position on a map. We also used atlases to identify some countries and explain which continent they are in.
PE - Our indoor PE sessions focused upon bouncing a ball and our outdoor session focused upon kicking a ball.
Art - We continued our sketching unit.
We also spent some time practising for our Nativity.
On Thursday afternoon we were lucky to have world famous author of the ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series of books, Jeff Kinney, come for a visit to our school. Ask your child about this - I am sure they will be excited to tell you!
Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.
Spelling
Mr W’s group - Y2 Common exception words (third set)
Mrs B’s group - Y1 Common exception words (third set)
There is also a handwriting practise sheet for each group’s spelling words.
Maths
Adding tens by drawing tens and ones booklet.
Writing
Writing exclamation sentences worksheet.
Exclamation sentences start with what or how and end with a verb and an exclamation mark.
For example: What a terrifying story it was! How funny the monkeys looked!
Golden Award - Willow - for being a kind and loving friend who always shows empathy towards others.
Writing Award - Georgie - for working hard to build sentences which are clearer and more descriptive.
Maths Award - Nina - for super problem solving with missing numbers.
Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Miss Andrew and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
We were lucky to have Mr Vincent and Bailey the Labradoodle with us again this Tuesday. This week’s children read to Bailey and we heard some interesting things we might here if Bailey was our teacher!
Here are some pictures of the Bailey’s Book Club ‘Word of the Week’ winners for the past 3 weeks.
We wish you a happy and peaceful weekend,
Mr Whetnall, Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Hall
