Good afternoon everyone,
This week we were lucky to be able to attend Mass at church to participate in Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. We thought about the importance of the ash cross and have been considering ways to prepare ourselves to become the best we can be as we remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us and the miracle of his resurrection. We talked about our Lenten promises and that we can do more than just give things up. We can challenge ourselves to do better in a variety of ways.
English - This week we developed our knowledge of exclamation sentences, expanded noun phrases and powerful verbs. We will use these skills to help us to create setting descriptions next week.
Maths - We have learned how to make the same amounts of money in different ways, using pounds, pence and a combination of both. We further developed our knowledge of coins and notes and focused on the importance of using £ and p symbols.
Science - We learned about dependency within habitats. We discussed how animals and plants help each other and rely on each other for their survival.
RE - We learned all about Lent. We discussed and wrote about the different ways that we can improve ourselves during Lent.
History - We learned about one more nurse, Edith Cavell, who worked during World War I. We collected evidence from sources to decide whether she was a hero or a traitor.
PE - In indoor PE we continued to work on balances with our partner and performed to the class. In outdoor PE we continued to develop our dribbling, passing and trapping skills with a football.
Computing - We began our work on algorithms and programming. We programmed a sprite to move forwards and backwards.
Please continue to practise the Year 1 and 2 Common Exception Words - both reading and spelling!
Please practice learning the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables as later this half term we will be having times table tests on these.
Other Tasks
Spellings
Spelling homework this week is to continue to practise the Year 1 or Year 2 words that your child is still unsure of from the list sent home before half term. I will choose 10 of these words for the children to have a spelling test a week on Friday.
Times Tables
This week’s times tables are the 3 times tables. Please practise these both ways (5 x 3 = 15 and 3 x 5 = 15, etc) for a test on Friday.
Handwriting
I have sent home a booklet of cursive letter joins. Please only do one or two different joins each week and please practice this join in other writing.
As always, the MOST important way that you can support your child is by reading regularly! Please do this as regularly as possible over the break!
Golden Award - Austin - for the kindness he consistently shows towards others.
Golden Award - Nicholas - for showing wonderful kindness in giving his turn to someone else.
Writing Award - George - for excellent expanded noun phrases.
Maths Award - Penny - for accurate money totals.
Discipleship Award -
WORLD BOOK DAY - Tuesday 2nd March.
To celebrate World Book Day we will be asking children to come to school dressed as their favourite book character on this day. If you can, bring the book with you and be prepared to talk about why you love this character and the book. Parents, please don’t feel under pressure to buy expensive costumes - the best ones are always the home-made ones. We are excited to see what each of the children will be!!
On Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd March the Life Education Centre will visit school with Harold the Giraffe to deliver a session to each of the classes on staying healthy - in both body and mind. Year 2’s day is WEDNESDAY 1st MARCH.
The children will have a session in class that day on feelings.
There will be Parent Session on THURSDAY 2nd MARCH in the hall at 8.55-9.10am so if you have 15 mins once you drop your child off, feel free to pop in!
KS 1 will be marking British Science Week in school with a whole host of exciting and engaging practical experiments to really bring Science alive! We will be kicking the week off on WEDNESDAY 8TH MARCH (change from the original date of 10th due to a double booking on the company’s behalf) with a Wild Animals VR workshop from Education Group. We are really excited to start off our week with such a wonderful experience for the children. The teachers had then planned fabulous experiments for the children for the rest of the week - with each afternoon given over to Science!
To support us with this we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £2 per child from parents. If you are able to contribute, please go to your ParentPay account where this donation will be added. Many thanks. (The rest of the cost of the visit and the week will be met by school, with help from the PTFA - many thanks)
