Well back to the Summer Term! I hope you have all had a Happy and Holy Easter. It is lovely to see the children so eager and keen to get back to work - it has been such a long time since I have seen them. Our focus this term will be to be compassionate and loving as we work to be disciples of Christ.
English - we have continued on with our RWI lessons. During these sessions we all focus on phonics, reading, spelling and sentence development. We have also been working on our pre-cursive handwriting in which we focus on how to write our letters, starting on the line. We are continuing to work hard on our common exception words, reading them in class every day!
Maths - this week we have been working on addition by making 10. We have done through the use of number lines, firstly jumping to 10 and then adding on the rest of the number so 5+9= we would do 5+5=10 and then add on the 4 to make 14. This is the first step towards rounding and is VERY important to aid children’s flexibility and fluency with number. Please support this work at home by continuing to work on your number bonds.
RE - this week has been all about the Resurrection of Jesus and how the disciples reacted to this news. We have focused on the road to Emmaus and how the disciple did not recognised the risen Christ at first.
Art - this week the children have started their new topic of Printing by using different materials to mark make.
Science - this week we started on new unit all about Plants by focusing on the parts of a plant and what they do. We also planted our sunflower seeds.
Topic - this week we have started our new Geography topic all abut where in the world we live. We have reminded ourselves of the 7 continents and then looked in particular at Europe and the UK. This week we have focused on the 4 countries that make up the UK and their capital cities
Many congratulations to this weeks winners……
Golden Award - Lincoln for showing respect towards his classmates, teachers and his environment. Lincoln takes care of our learning space and tries to help others do the same.
Writing Award - Esme for a huge improvement in pre-cursive handwriting and showing great levels of independence in writing by herself.
Maths Award - Hosanna for taking a more active role in Maths lessons this week and giving her work more attention.
PE will be on Monday and Friday so please send the children into class in the PE kits on those days. No earrings can be worn for PE so please ensure that they are taken out at home.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle this week. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 1 have white tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Gilheaney, Miss Simons and Mrs Connolly and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Miss Simons and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it create fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bag - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
Homework Expectations - please see the Homework page for what I expect the children to do at home…..don’t worry, it’s mainly just reading!! Yr1 Homework — Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School (squarespace.com)
PHONICS SCREENING - Year 1 Phonics Screening will take place the week of 10th June. (First week back after our half term holiday) Please ensure your child is is school this week as each child must complete an individual phonic assessment at some point during this week. I will carry out the assessments and decide which day your child will complete the assessment based on a range of factors, such as mood that day, readiness for learning etc. I will be holding a short Parent Meeting to discuss this further - date to be arranged - so please look out for this.
