Reading - what a wonderful thing to do! I have been delighted to see so many of Year 1 be awarded their reading certificates this half term to recognise their hard work at home. please keep it up! As we are on half term next week, please feel free to get your child to read their own books over the holidays and hopefully you will have the time to share some stories with your child too. I love nothing better than listening to the children telling me all about their favourite books. With World Book Day just around the corner, look out for all the reading themed activities we will be doing in school. Happy Reading! (World Book Day Thursday 2nd March)
English - we have continued on with our RWI lessons. During these sessions we all focus on phonics, reading, spelling and sentence development. We have also been working on our pre-cursive handwriting in which we focus on how to write our letters, starting on the line. We are continuing to work hard on our common exception words, reading them in class every day!
Maths - this week we have been learning all about the langauge of subtraction questions, such as difference and more than. We have lloked at how we can use counters, drawings and number lines to help us answer these questions. The anguage of these questions acn sometimes trip the children up, so I have been delighted to see how well that have taken on-board and used these terms in their own conversations this week.
RE - this week has been all about The Presentation of the Lord and the children writing their own versions of the story…I have been so impressed with their beautiful and reflective writing. Well done Year 1!
Science - this week we have continued with our topic all about Materials. This week we have focused on waterproof and adsorbent materials with the children testing out materials for themselves. Great, wet, fun was had by all!
Geography - our focus for this half term is all about maps and the various pieces of information that different maps provide. This week we looked at human features of towns and how towns are organised. The children then made their own plan of a town, thinking carefully at where they would put all the different human features.
ICT - this week was all about Internet Safety and how we keep ourselves safe online…and what to do if we find something we don’t like. Our message is always, tell an adult straight away.
Art - This week the children had a little Art fun with a mixture of lots of different activities…including a spot of free painting!
Well done to our winners this week…..

On Tuesday 7th February we marked Safer Internet Day in school. This is a very important part of our work to keep children safe online. Please spare a few minutes at home to talk about what the children have learnt in school and how they keep safe online - this year’s theme is ‘Want to talk about it?’ and encourages young children to talk about anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. Please take a look at the newsletter below with important information on this subject.
WORLD BOOK DAY - Tuesday 2nd March
Advanced Notice -To celebrate World Book Day we will be asking children to come to school dressed as their favourite book character on this day. If you can, bring the book with you and be prepared to talk about why you love this character and the book. Parents, please don’t feel under pressure to buy expensive costumes - the best ones are always the home-made ones.
KS 1 will be marking British Science Week in school with a whole host of exciting and engaging practical experiments to really bring Science alive! We will be kicking the week off on FRIDAY 10th MARCH with a Wild Animals VR workshop from Education Group. We are really excited to start off our week with such a wonderful experience for the children. The teachers had then planned fabulous experiments for the children for the rest of the week - with each afternoon given over to Science!
To support us with this we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £2 per child from parents. If you are able to contribute, please go to your ParentPay account where this donation will be added. Many thanks. (The rest of the cost of the visit and the week will be met by school, with help from the PTFA - many thanks)
