This week we have continued with our focus on Mary, Mother of Jesus. We have been working hard on learning the Hail Mary prayer and adding this prayer to our morning prayer ritual. The children are doing really well…maybe it is a prayer that you could say together at home too.
English - we have continued on with our RWI lessons. During these sessions we all focus on phonics, reading, spelling and sentence development. We have also been working on our pre-cursive handwriting in which we focus on how to write our letters, starting on the line. We have also been learning how to spelling because suing the rhyme….big elephants can always understand small elephants. As well as that we are focusing on the tricky words of ’said and ‘you’ - how to recognise them, read them and spell them.
Maths - this week we have continued to work on parts and wholes as our introduction to addition and subtraction. This week we have added ten frames and bead strings into our resources box and used them to help us partition a number into two parts and then use them to help us write four calculations to match our model. We have looked at how the whole can came first, so 4+6=10 can also be wrttien as 10=4+6.
RE - this half term is all about Mary. We have continued with our learning of the Hail Mary prayer and also written some I wonder questions about things we wonder about mary.
Science - our topic this half term is all about animals. This week we have focused on the similarities and difference between mammals and birds.
Geography - our focus for this half term is all about the world around us, with a focus on continents. We continued this week with looking at the seven continents of the world and then focusing in on Australia this week and elements of Australian life.
ICT - this have term it is all about algorithms - we have started by looking at algorithms as simply a set of instructions. We have considered how precise our instructions have to be if we want someone to do exactly as we want!
Art - this week the children have continued with their textiles unit by sewing a sea creature of making a jelly fish! Great fun was had by all. (The sewing will take a number of weeks to complete as not all children can do their sewing at once! Mrs V will continue until all the groups have made their sea creature)
Many congratulations to this week’s winners…
Golden Award - Eris-Rose for working hard across all subjects to improve her learning and always contributing to class discussions.
Writing Award - Leighton for super ‘I wonder’ questions about Mary.
Maths Award - Coric for super part part whole work this week using bead strings, ten frames and counters
PE will be on Monday and Friday so please send the children into class in the PE kits on those days. No earrings can be worn for PE so please ensure that they are taken out at home.
Water bottles - This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Veasey and Miss Sanderson and is also when the children will have Music with Miss Hope
Homework Expectations - please see the Homework page for what I expect the children to do at home…..don’t worry, it’s mainly just reading!! Year 1 News letterYear 1 Homework Expectations - Autumn — Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School (squarespace.com)
PHONICS Support - take a look at Oxford Owl for information about how you can help your child at home with their phonics and reading. This is is a great site in general but the page linked has a super little video showing how the sounds should be pronounced. See how many sounds your child knows! CHRISTMAS CARDS - I hate to mention it already, but I have been asked about cards this week. Although it is lovely to want to send a card to everyone in the class, it is not necassary. The children often leave them in school and they end up in the bin, it also takes up SO much time giving them out. Instead can we ask that if you wish to send a card then just send in ONE for the whole class and a £1 donation to CAFOD. We feel this is a much better use of your hard-earned money and will help us support Catholic charities around the world. (Please don’t feel you have to send a card at all) Many thanks.
Thank-you so much for supporting our Children In Need collection today - the children all looked very colourful in their own clothes and it has given us the chance to look at allthe wonderful work the charity does to support young people. Many thanks.
We are delighted to be able to share with you the Good News Gospel readings for families. Please follow the link to share the Gospel at home with your family. These are really child-friendly resources to share at home. https://www.paperturn-view.com/uk/wednesday-word/faithfulness?pid=MTA101634&v=74.6
This year Year 1 will join together with Year 2 to perform our nativity concert. This is called The Nativity! We haven’t actually made a start yet, but if you want to listen to the songs and have a little practice, please follow the link below. The children have come home with a song sheet tonight and we will start to learn these songs next week. Any help you can give will be grateful received. We try to sort out costumes in school, but we will be in touch asap if there is anything we need you to provide. NO parts have been given out to Year 1 yet - and please note Year 1 provide the support to Year 2 who take the main speaking/acting roles. We will do two performances on WEDNESDAY 14TH DECEMBER at 9.30am and 2pm. Each child will receive TWO TICKETS for each performance. We have to do this to ensure the health and safety of our children as we simply CANNOT fit every child’s whole family in the hall at the same time. Many thanks.
‘We would like to invite the children in Reception and KS1 back in to school on Friday 2nd December for a Christmas movie night! The children can wear Christmas pyjamas or clothing and for a cost of £2, they will be able to enjoy some festive treats as they watch the film. We are going to ask for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 to come back to school at 4.30pm until 6pm. If your child would like to attend, please pay the requested £2 via parentpay.’
Secondly, after each of the 2pm nativity performances, the PTA would like to invite parents in to the dining hall for refreshments (non alcoholic mulled wine and mince pies). There will be a nominal cost for this. The PTA will also be selling raffle tickets at each performance - there will be some fantastic prizes on offer and all funds raised will go towards PTA funds.
And finally….have a lovely weekend. Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Vesey and Miss Sanderson.
