Good morning everyone and welcome to Week 6 of Home Learning. Here is your work for the week ahead….

Maths - This week we are going to start working on addition and subtraction of numbers with 20. This includes learning our number bonds to 20. The most important part of this unit is counting on from a number starting point other than 0, for example 12 + 5 = we would start counting on from 12 on a number line and then add 5 AND NOT start from 0 to add 12 and then add 5. Also, it is important for the children to see patterns and recognise what is the same and what is different. Look at this question 7 + 2 = 9 17 + 2 = 19 - what is the same/what is different? Notice that 17 is 10 more than 7 so the answer must be 10 more as the 2 remains the same. Talking about these numbers and asking the children to explain what the can see is very important to their mathematical learning.

Just like last week, it is important that the children refer to the parts of the number as tens and ones (not tens and units) and that they see that numbers above ten are made up of TWO PARTS - TENS and ONES so that the number 17 is made up of 1 ten and 7 ones NOT a 1 and a 7 — these are the digits that mean we can write the number down and not the VALUE of the numbers. We have worked on finding one more and one less than a number above 10 for some time in Mental Maths and our daily starters, so hopefully the children will be used to this.

This week the children will need to use a part part model - it doesn’t matter which way round the children use this model - they do know that — as long as they identify which circles are the parts and which is the whole. (The whole is the largest number). You can simply draw a model, or use the example below

Part Part Model

The videos will support the children in their new learning and I have added a Power Point of number bonds to 20 and an activity to practice these number bonds. See what you notice with these number bonds - what is the same, what is different to the number bonds to 10?

Number Bonds to 20 Power Point

Number Bonds to 20 activity

In terms of Mental Maths please keep up with adding and subtracting numbers to 10 to make number bonds, ask your child what do I need to make 10 if I start at 6? You may find this website useful - it has some lovely Maths games for KS1 https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/counting

I have also added a Daily Power Point with a mixture of questions - these are from 2019 and are for KS1 so some may be a bit tricky - but I knw a lot of the children enjoy a challenge!! There are loads of these, so could try a couple each day!

Daily Maths Questions

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-2-number-addition-and-subtraction-within-20/ Please note there is not a work sheet activity for Monday - it requires a dice and a set of digit cards (10-20) I have added a recording sheet if the children wish to record their work and send it to me - although feel free to record it on a piece of paper or whiteboard if you have one. I have added a set of digit cards if you wish to print them off, although probably easier just to cut up a bit of paper and write the number. I have added an extra activity for Thursday, as Wednesday’s task is meant too be completed over two days - although for those of you who complete the task in one day, I have added an extra something!!

Maths - Monday Recording Sheet Digit Cards

Maths - Tuesday

Maths - Wednesday

Maths - Thursday Extra Activity if needed

Maths - Friday

I have added a NEW Number Bonds to 20 Power Point and a game to support this unit - you may find the slides helpful as quick fire questions to support mental Maths for this week. Hopefully the children will recognise what is the same and what is different about the numbers as they compare these number bonds with the number bonds to 20. EXTRA NUMBER BOND ACTIVITIES — these are not an expectation - just a bit extra!

SumDog Maths - I have also set all the children up with a SumDog login - an online learning platform. I have texted the children’s individual login details - I thought it would just be another activity to keep the children’s Mental Maths skills going! The school login code is ola We do have limited free access - but I thought it may appeal to some of the children. https://www.sumdog.com/en/

For English - We are going to continue with our second week of the unit on story telling, focusing on Jack and the Beanstalk (a story that we actually started in class just before Lockdown)

This is a second week of the unit with a new set of video lessons and a new teacher. During this unit we will continue to examine the problems faced by the main characters and look at boxing up the story for purpose. We will also explore regular plurals by adding ‘s’ and how to use the personal pronoun ‘I’ correctly in our writing.

I hope you enjoy this story unit - I have loved seeing all your information work on Jack and the Beanstalk so far! Keep up the hard work with your writing at home Year 1 - practice your handwriting, always remember to start your letters on the line, work on your Common Exception words and keep practicing your phonics every day.

Please take a look at Education City - password in the front of the children’s reading records - I will ensure that your child has work that they can access on this site. If your child hasn’t got their password because it was in the old reading record - just get in touch on dojo and I will send it to you.

Also, use homework page on class blog for Phase 3 phonics, handwriting and Oxford Owl site.  http://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-homework

Phonics Focus for this week, we are having a bit of a re-cap over previously taught sounds - ‘ar’ start the car and ‘oi’ spoil the boy - BBC Bitesize is super for Phonics support and KS1 activities in general. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/z3g4d2p Also see https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk for phonics support. I have also added an image of the RWI phonics and rhymes that we use in class. Please try and practice these each day.

Phonics Video Link - Set 2 and 3 sounds - the children may find listening to the little video helpful and they can join in too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR0BV1zaFDM

READING - Please use the Oxford Owl site for a wealth of free ebooks appropriate for Year 1. Please continue to read each day - books from this site and your child’s own books from home. You can continue to keep a record of daily reading in your child’s reading record. https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/

It is really important that even if your child is in school they read to an adult at home each day, as due to reduced staff members in school we are not having daily Guided Reading lessons.

You may find these resources helpful to support reading at home - one of the posters added ahs lots of reading sites that you may find useful to support home reading. The sites are all free - you may just need to register. Reading Home Links Tips for supporting reading at home

Please DO NOT bring in the children’s work to school - but do post pictures into the PORTFOLIO section of Class Dojo. It is now a Government expectation that parents send in their child’s work so that their teacher can see what they are doing at home - many, many thanks for the time you are taking to send me your child’s work.

Try to do 3 hours of school work - 30 minutes of Phonics and Reading, 45 minutes of English and handwriting practice, 45 minutes of Maths including Mental Maths (we are working on doubling and halving within 10, adding one more or one less to a number under 30 in class) and an hour of Topic based work in the afternoon. Just try your best - that is all I ask - I know it is very hard when you are working at home too.

The handwriting format, the common exception words for Year 1 and the Phase Three phonics chart are on the Homework page of this site. Please see the following page. https://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-homework/2020/11/13/autumn-term-expectations

Monday - RE Families and Celebrations.

This topic is designed to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of what it means to belong to the family called the Church. There are opportunities at this point to explore the celebration of Baptism. It introduces the topic by exploring what it means to belong to a family and the school community. The topic also gives opportunities for the children to know that God is our Father in heaven and about special celebrations that take place in Church. The children will learn about the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and that the title ‘Jesus, light of the world’ comes from this story.

Today we will be focusing on Jesus’ early life; where he lives, what did did as a child to help parents, what he trained to do and why people thought he was so special.

I would like the children to watch this short video about Jesus to find out a little bit about Jesus’ early life. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zfpvcdm Talk about what you have found out and how this compares with your life. I would like the children to see that Jesus was a person, like them, with a family and jobs he had to do to help out - us like them!

Once the children have watched the video I would like them to write about Jesus and his early life, including the facts that they have just found out. Activity Sheet

Tuesday - Science we will be continuing with our topic all about Materials - how they feel, what they look like, how we can describe them and importantly, what it each object made of. Today we will look at ‘Which material is best for different objects?’ I have added a video unit on Materials that you can follow lesson by lesson, please go to LESSON 6 today - watch the video and follow the activities.

Extra Science Activities Worksheet 1 Material Hunt Transparent and Opaque Assessment Activity

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zrssgk7 BBC Bitesize also has some lovely short videos on materials - just follow the link!

Tuesday 9th February is Safer Internet Day - a day we always mark in school with an assembly and lesson/activity. This year’s focus is An Internet We Can Trust - ensuring that we know the facts we read are true and how to spot information that is not true. I have added the assembly, lesson power point and social media campaign details and poster for the children to complete. A photo of the poster on dojo would be great. In this poster that children just need to write a pledge about how they will ensure the information they read is believable - so for Year 1 it could be something like - I will always check my fact with a grown up or I will only look at the internet with a grown up. (The poster for the children to complete is at the end of the social media information.)

Assembly Lesson Power Point Information + poster activity

Wednesday - Geography today we will finish with our topic all about the oceans and seas - today focusing on ‘How is the ocean different at the north Pole to the Equator?’ Follow the link and watch LESSON 6. In this lesson, we are going to be comparing the oceans surrounding the North Pole and the Equator. First we will be focusing on what the equator is. We will be learning about some animals which are able to survive in the cold waters of the Arctic, where many other living things cannot.

There is quite a bit of work to do in this lesson drawing and writing about what lives in the oceans near the North Pole and the Equator. These tasks are enough for this lesson, but if you wish to do any of the extra tasks I have added, I look forward to seeing them but they are just an extra and NOT an expected as it does require quite a bit of parent help to read through the facts - just thought the children might find it interesting! Don’t forget the Oddizzi Geography materials too which are also all about the oceans.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/units/oceans-and-seas-a546

Extra Activities What Am I? Power Points Sea Creature Fact File (just choose the ones you like, there are a lot!)

So sorry for the mix up with the Geography last week, directing you to Lesson 5 and then giving you the instructions for Lesson 6! If you did Lesson 6 last week, just do Lesson 5 today - the extra activities will fit along side either lesson. My apologies.

RE - we will continue with our work on the life of Jesus - today focusing on why Jesus was referred to as The Light of the World and how we can shine our light for Jesus. I have added a you tube video for the children to watch to explain why Jesus was referred to as the Light of the World by John. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mceLmRVudyc Please discuss what the story is telling you about Jesus and what John meant by speaking about Jesus as a light.

Power Point - this point point discusses Christian symbols and also focuses on the symbol of the candle and what it means to Christians around the world.

I would then like the children to think about how they can be like Jesus and Shine their Light for Him -fill your poster with ways in which you will Shine Your Light for Jesus! Activity

Thursday - Art I found it a bit tricky adding something to the website regarding our new topic of drawing, as in class Mrs Veasey teaches the children all about types of line and techniques for drawing - lots of things I found were too advanced for Year 1. Anyway, I have found a little series of power points that over the course of the half term will teach the children drawing skills and includes an Artist Study - which would always do in class -focusing on Picasso.

Today’s lesson focuses on how Paul Klee and Henri Matisse used drawing and water colours. This lesson is based on using straight and curved lines to create movement in a picture, like that of Paul Klee and Henri Matisse. There is an activity sheet for this lesson for those children who may find drawing their own picture a bit tricky - I have added it, but I would rather see the children’s own creations. Have fun and Mrs V and I look forward to seeing the results!

Power point Fact Sheet about Matisse Activity - supporting drawing of a moving person

Friday - there are no added activities for Friday as we all finish school at 1.15pm today! But if you need some Friday afternoon activities, try some of these…..

Extra Activities/Sites to use - just in case you need activities for the Friday afternoon or have any extra time in the afternoons.

Oddizzi - This week’s focus is the Pacific Ocean so fits in perfectly with our Geography unit! This is an added extra - if you fancy a bit of extra Geography work - the units are great for Year 1 and all the activities are there for you to either print out if you an, or do from the screen onto paper if not. Take a look and see what you think - send me some examples of the children’s work if you have ago at the activities. This could be a perfect Friday afternoon activity if you need the children to be working whilst you are! Oddizzi - World Explorers Week 5

Twinkl - to support parents with Home Learning, Twinkl, have produced a range of lessons and activities that you may find useful as added extra’s. Each week they will add new content and it is all free! Check it out and see if you what you think. These are extra’s and not part of my expectations for the week - but sometimes it is good to have a choice of activities and know which sites are worth looking at. These are resources that are used to support learning in school so certainly worth a look. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/home-learning-hub

BBC Bitesize - always worth a look for activities to support all subjects - particularly phonics. This link takes you straight to the KS 1 pages. There are super English, Maths, Science, Geography, History activities here - great place to look as suitable for KS1 children and always in line with what we do in class. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/z3g4d2p

Music - I have sent you all a personal login for your your child to a Music site set up by Miss Benson, our Music teacher, which will have new content added to it each week. Now your child can enjoy their music lessons at home too! New content will be added by Miss Benson each FRIDAY (not Wednesday as she had done previously)

Instructions from Miss Benson - Year 1 Lockdown Lesson 5:

This week I want you to click on ‘warm-up games’ and choose Challenge 4. Follow the instructions to move to the pulse, clap and sing back phrases. If you like, you can now try challenges 5 & 6.

Next, we are going to start learning to sign the song ‘Round and Round.’ Watch the video and copy the actions. Have lots of fun turning round and round!

PE - it is important for the children to keep active during lockdown - not quite as easy now that it is so cold outside! Children should be getting at least an hour of exercise each day - so with that in mind, don’t forget that Joe Wicks starts his ‘PE with Joe’ sessions again this week— starting Monday, with a new session on a Wednesday and Friday each week. I certainly loved these sessions last time and will be joining in! Hope you enjoy these sessions, and try to get out for a walk each day if you can.

RE - to support the children in their religious education, don’t forget to check out Fr Jim’s website. Fr Jim posts all the Masses here and the Children’s Liturgy activities are lovely. https://www.olablackpool.org/

Health and wellbeing Resources - I know this is a tricky time for us all - the children included - so I though I would add this little pack of activities to help remind them that they are all wonderful an amazing people. I particularly like the balloons activity about the things that the children all really great at and the positivity jar - we made one of these at home during the lockdown and it really focuses the mind on all that is good in the world. Take a look and use what you like and think will work with your child. Resource pack

Support for Parents - this information pack has a few useful links to support reading - I added the ones I thought most relevant to Year 1 under the reading heading - but the video at the bottom and the checklist for the day may be useful if you are finding it difficult to get into a good routine for Home Learning. The video can be accessed through the link and is suitable for KS 1 children. take a look if you think you would find it useful. Support for parents during Cnvid-19 Lockdown

PLEASE SEND ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S WORK THROUGH THE PORTFOLIO SECTION OF CLASS DOJO. Any problems, please just email me.

year1@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk

Have a good week and I look forward to seeing your work. Please make sure you have sent examples of the children’s work to me by 12pm on a Friday so that I can comment on it by the end of the schhol day (which on Friday is 1.30pm) - or you can post each day if that is easier for you! (That actually really helps me to keep on top of it!) I know many of you are setting our own routines for completing school work which fit around your own work commitments, and that is completely understandable, all I ask is that you are in touch and send me the children’s work AT LEASET ONCE A WEEK. Many, many thanks. I can’t express my grateful thanks for all you are doing - you are all wonderful! Mrs Hollinghurst

As we finish for Half-Term today, any work that is sent in after 1.30pm may not be looked at or commented on before the break. I will not be looking at Class Dojo or emails over the week’s holiday.

Year 1 - be good, work hard and stay safe……Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins
