Good morning everyone and welcome to Week 8 of Home Learning. This is our last week of Home Learning before we all come back together again nest week!! Here is your work for the week ahead….
Maths - This week we are going to continue working on addition and subtraction of numbers with 20, with a greater focus on subtraction. This week we start by focusing on subtraction that crosses the ten boundary - meaning subtracting a one digit number from a two digit number with a lower ones value -for example 14 - 8 =. This subtraction can obviously be answered, but I would like the children to notice that in order to do this we would need to count back on our number line, or if we are using tens and ones sticks, we would need to exchange the ten stick for ten ones in order to have enough ones. We will use number lines and ten frames this week to support our work, please use the ones provided if you need them at home. This week involves lots of practice of using number lines - please encourage the children to count back on a number line, not their fingers. It really helps if the children can see the numbers as they count back. I would also like the children to still keep thinking about number bonds and how numbers can be partitioned. For example 14-8 = you can subtract 4 to get back to 10 and then another 4 as the number 8 can be separated into 4 and 4.This may seem a little long winded but it supports Mental Maths skills - these are ways in which we automatically break up numbers in our heads to make addition and subtraction easier, but these skills need to be taught - not all children see patterns in numbers this easily.
It is important that the children refer to the parts of the number as tens and ones (not tens and units) and that they see that numbers above ten are made up of TWO PARTS - TENS and ONES so that the number 17 is made up of 1 ten and 7 ones NOT a 1 and a 7 — these are the digits that mean we can write the number down and not the VALUE of the numbers. We have worked on finding one more and one less than a number above 10 for some time in Mental Maths and our daily starters, so hopefully the children will be used to this.
This week the children will need to use a Ten Frame and Number Line - I have added on here for the children to use. TEN FRAME NUMBER LINE
The videos will support the children in their new learning and I have added a Power Point of number bonds to 20 and an activity to practice these number bonds. See what you notice with these number bonds - what is the same, what is different to the number bonds to 10? I have also added a couple of extra activities to support using a number line for subtraction and an addition and subtraction activity asking the children to write a question in words to support the calculations.
Number Bonds to 20 Power Point
Extra Activities Subtraction Activity 1 Activity 2 Addition and Subtraction 1 Subtraction Challenge Cards
In terms of Mental Maths please keep up with adding and subtracting numbers to 10 and 20 to make number bonds, ask your child what do I need to make 10 if I start at 6? What do I need to make 20 if I start at 16? You may find this website useful - it has some lovely Maths games for KS1 https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/counting
I have also added a Daily Power Point with a mixture of questions - these are from 2019 and are for KS1 so some may be a bit tricky - but I know a lot of the children enjoy a challenge!! There are loads of these, so could try a couple each day!
I have added my own activity for Friday - there isn’t a video for Friday so I have added a couple of activities to consolidate our learning for the week and to make sure the children have plenty to do!!
It is important for the children to recognise how numbers can be separated to make subtraction and addition easier - the use of the ten frame and different coloured crayons really helps the children with this concept. So when adding 8 + 6 = we need to notice that 8 just needs 2 more added to make 10, and then we just have 4 left to add as 6 can be separated into 2 + 4 in this question. This may seem like a long winded way to work, BUT it is an ESSENTIAL Mental Maths step for the children to SEE how numbers can be manipulated. We do this automatically in our heads when adding mental BUT this only happens IF you have been taught to do it. This focus is all about mental manipulation of numbers - that’s why we work on numbers under 20 for so long, to cement these concepts. Any questions - just let me know. Many thanks. (please encourage the children to use a TEN FRAME or NUMBER LINE and NOT their fingers!!)
Maths - Friday Fact Families Work (just ignore the number bonds to 100!) Addition and Subtraction Assessment (see what you have learnt!)
I have added a Number Bonds to 20 game to support this unit. Hopefully the children will recognise what is the same and what is different about the numbers as they compare these number bonds with the number bonds to 20. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/go/resource/T-GO-02-number-bonds-1-to-20
SumDog Maths - I have also set all the children up with a SumDog login - an online learning platform. I have texted the children’s individual login details - I thought it would just be another activity to keep the children’s Mental Maths skills going! The school login code is ola We do have limited free access - but I thought it may appeal to some of the children. https://www.sumdog.com/en/
For English - We are going to move onto the second week of our a unit on Explanation Texts - examining How Beans Grow.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/units/explanation-how-beans-grow-980b
During this unit we will examine the structure of explanation texts, their purpose and the information they contain. This unit will also involve the retrieval of information to answer questions and has a focus on the spelling of common exception words, using letter names as well as sounds and using full stops correctly in independent writing. This week the children will examine the features of an explanation text and then have a go at writing their own.
THURSDAY 4TH MARCH IS WORLD BOOK DAY - so on this day we will have a little break from our unit to do some special activities related to books and our favourite books. With this in mind, and so that we can complete our explanation unit before we return to school, I would like us to MISS OUT LESSON 10 - meaning on Wednesday do Lesson 8 to start writing your own explanation text - take a break for World Book Day activities on Thursday - then on Friday do Lesson 9 to complete writing your explanation. Hope that makes sense!!
To celebrate World Book Day we are asking the children to dress up as a favourite book character at home, if you are able to, and I would love for you to share your pictures of your outfits through Class Dojo! I look forward to hearing all about your favourite books and characters through the activity booklet I have added, Remember that home made costumes are always the best! I hope you enjoy this lovely day dedicated to the best things in the world - books and reading!!
World Book Day Power Point Guess the Story Cards World Book Day Activity Booklet Scavenger Hunt Masked Reader Power Point Quiz! Word Search Word Game Power Point Character Hunt Instructions Character Hunt Image
WORLD BOOK DAY COMPETITION!!! We would all the children, whether at home or at school, to design their own bookmark. There will be a winner chosen from each class and then an overall winner from Key Stage 1 and key Stage 2 chosen by Miss Haggerty. Your entries, if at home, need to be sent to me by email NOT dojo by Monday 8th March. Sending them by email means I can print them out (I can’t copy and print photos from dojo) and add them to the entries from the children in school. The bookmarks will be judged once we are all back at school and all winners will be announced on Friday 12th March. Good Luck!!
I have added a few support materials to use alongside this unit IF you wish to use them - these are just added extra’s not a must. Bean word mat Power Point Bean Diary Time Lapse Video Bean Life Cycle Power Point Cut and Stick Activity
I hope you enjoy this Explanation unit - I have loved seeing all your English work so far! Keep up the hard work with your writing at home Year 1 - practice your handwriting, always remember to start your letters on the line, work on your Common Exception words and keep practicing your phonics every day.
Please take a look at Education City - password in the front of the children’s reading records - I will ensure that your child has work that they can access on this site. If your child hasn’t got their password because it was in the old reading record - just get in touch on dojo and I will send it to you.

READING - Please use the Oxford Owl site for a wealth of free ebooks appropriate for Year 1. Please continue to read each day - books from this site and your child’s own books from home. You can continue to keep a record of daily reading in your child’s reading record. https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/
It is really important that even if your child is in school they read to an adult at home each day, as due to reduced staff members in school we are not having daily Guided Reading lessons.
You may find these resources helpful to support reading at home - one of the posters added ahs lots of reading sites that you may find useful to support home reading. The sites are all free - you may just need to register. Reading Home Links Tips for supporting reading at home
Please DO NOT bring in the children’s work to school - but do post pictures into the PORTFOLIO section of Class Dojo. It is now a Government expectation that parents send in their child’s work so that their teacher can see what they are doing at home - many, many thanks for the time you are taking to send me your child’s work.
Try to do 3 hours of school work - 30 minutes of Phonics and Reading, 45 minutes of English and handwriting practice, 45 minutes of Maths including Mental Maths (we are working on doubling and halving within 10, adding one more or one less to a number under 30 in class) and an hour of Topic based work in the afternoon. Just try your best - that is all I ask - I know it is very hard when you are working at home too.
The handwriting format, the common exception words for Year 1 and the Phase Three phonics chart are on the Homework page of this site. Please see the following page. https://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-homework/2020/11/13/autumn-term-expectations
Monday - RE Families and Celebrations.
This topic is designed to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of what it means to belong to the family called the Church. There are opportunities at this point to explore the celebration of Baptism. It introduces the topic by exploring what it means to belong to a family and the school community. The topic also gives opportunities for the children to know that God is our Father in heaven and about special celebrations that take place in Church. The children will learn about the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and that the title ‘Jesus, light of the world’ comes from this story.
Today we will be learning about the inside of the church and what important things we would expect to see inside the Church. It is such a long time since we have been able to take the children into Church — that I thought it was worth spending the time on talking about why this is such an important place and what we would see inside a Church building.
Today, we will start by looking at the Power Point showing pictures of different Churches and what we would expect to see inside them. Power Point . This also discusses some of the important events that take place inside a Church ie Baptism that we have focused on in this unit. Please discuss with your child the reasons why we go to Church - for a wedding, A baptism, a funeral, to pray, to be peaceful with God, to take part in the Mass, to take Holy Communion. Our task today is staged at the end of the power point - to make a leaflet for Our Lady’s Church for an Open Day to tell people what they would see if they came to our Church. make the leaflet bright and colourful as well as informative! I look forward to seeing what you come up with …..as I am sure Fr Jim will too! All you need is a piece of paper niceley folded to make a leaflet. Take a look at Fr Jim’s page for a video of Mass so that you can remind yourself of what Our Lady’s Church looks like inside. https://www.olablackpool.org/
Tuesday - Science we have a change of unit this half-term to Seasonal Change - where we will focus on the weather, how it changes, what changes take place, all about the four seasons and the differences between the seasons. Today we will start with Lesson 2 How does the weather change across the seasons?
https://classroom.thenational.academy/units/seasons-and-change-3c8a
In this lesson, we are going to be looking at more detailed impressions of what scientists are and look like. This will help us begin our lesson, then we will look at understanding how the weather changes across seasons. We will be reminding ourselves of the different types of weather and comparing this to the seasons. Lastly, we will be beginning our first scientific experiment! You will need a pencil, piece of paper and your weather drawing from last week.
EXTRA ACTIVITIES IF NEEDED What Season Am I? Power point Seasons Matching Activity Weather Record Sheet
Wednesday - History. This half term we have a History focus based on Life in Living Memory and Childhood. In this unit we focus on how life has changed over time - food, clothes, music, travel, houses and toys. We will begin with toys today. It is quite tricky for the children to think about how their live has changed over time as they are only 5 and 6 years old, hence the reason why we will base this unit in toys - as they can see what toys they have and what their life is like at home and talk about that with you to discuss what your childhood toys were like. I have included a BBC Bitesize link to childhood through the ages - I wouldn’t like to hazard a guess at people’s ages - so just pick the decade that applies to you! You could look at the decade that grandparent’s were children too. These are lovely little videos that make it a bit easier for the children to ‘see’ how things have changed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zc9s6g8
I have included a video unit to support this topic - How Have People’s Lives Have Changed In Living Memory? Please follow the link and start from LESSON 4 How Have Toys Changed? Part 2
In this lesson, we will continue to learn about some of the ways in which toys have changed over time. We will learn how modern technology has affected the ways in which children play. We will then look at some examples of electronic and non-electronic games. You will need a piece of paper and a pencil.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/units/how-have-peoples-lives-changed-in-living-memory-e32c
The video provides the children with a few tasks to do - but I added a couple of extra tasks if you need them - one of them is a little fun activity to make a Victorian Jack-in-a-Box - I hope it isn’t too complicated!!!
Power Point Writing Activity Jack-in-a-box Making Activity (may need a coupe of pairs of hands!)
RE - we will continue with our work on Christian Beliefs and why people go to Church which we discussed at the end of Monday’s lesson. Today we will discuss what Christian Beliefs are, why they are important and why it is essential that we respect these beliefs. Please read the following Power point with your child and discuss these core beliefs. Christian Beliefs Power Point Once you have read and discussed these beliefs and why they are important and what the children think are the key beliefs of the Christian Faith- then I would like them to write about what they have learnt the activity sheets added. ACTIVITY
Thursday - Art This half term we are going to focus on how a series of different artists use colour in their work to portray what they see and their feelings towards their study. Our unit is called Colour Chaos. In this unit we will examine the work of Mondrian, Klee, Delaunary, Kandinsky and Pollack and look at how they used colour, space and shape to create their works of art. I he the children have fun with this unit and learn a little about some new artists.
Today’s lesson we focus on how Mark Rothko used colour mixing to produce his abstract work. I would like the children to experiment with this style and colours to create their own ’colour mixing’ work in the style of Rothko. The children will need some paints, a brush, water pot, paper and something to mix their paint colours in. There is an activity sheet for this lesson for those children who may find planning on their own picture a bit tricky - I have added it, but I would rather see the children’s own creations. Have fun and Mrs V and I look forward to seeing the results!
Power point Fact Sheet about Rothko Activity - supporting colour mixing
Friday - there are no added activities for Friday as we all finish school at 1.15pm today! But if you need some Friday afternoon activities, try some of these…..
Extra Activities/Sites to use - just in case you need activities for the Friday afternoon or have any extra time in the afternoons.
Oddizzi - This week’s focus is the This week’s focus is the Antarctica so fits in perfectly with our Geography unit from last half term! This is an added extra - if you fancy a bit of extra Geography work - the units are great for Year 1 and all the activities are there for you to either print out if you an, or do from the screen onto paper if not. Take a look and see what you think - send me some examples of the children’s work if you have ago at the activities. This could be a perfect Friday afternoon activity if you need the children to be working whilst you are! Oddizzi - World Explorers Week 6
Twinkl - to support parents with Home Learning, Twinkl, have produced a range of lessons and activities that you may find useful as added extra’s. Each week they will add new content and it is all free! Check it out and see if you what you think. These are extra’s and not part of my expectations for the week - but sometimes it is good to have a choice of activities and know which sites are worth looking at. These are resources that are used to support learning in school so certainly worth a look. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/home-learning-hub
BBC Bitesize - always worth a look for activities to support all subjects - particularly phonics. This link takes you straight to the KS 1 pages. There are super English, Maths, Science, Geography, History activities here - great place to look as suitable for KS1 children and always in line with what we do in class. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/z3g4d2p
Music - I have sent you all a personal login for your your child to a Music site set up by Miss Benson, our Music teacher, which will have new content added to it each week. Now your child can enjoy their music lessons at home too! New content will be added by Miss Benson each FRIDAY (not Wednesday as she had done previously)
Instructions from Miss Benson - Year 1 'Imagination'
Listen to the song ‘Your Imagination.’ Close your eyes and listen to the words. Can you imagine everything in the song?
Also, have a go at Challenge 1 in the Warm Up Games section.
PE - it is important for the children to keep active during lockdown - not quite as easy now that it is so cold outside! Children should be getting at least an hour of exercise each day - so with that in mind, don’t forget that Joe Wicks starts his ‘PE with Joe’ sessions again this week— starting Monday, with a new session on a Wednesday and Friday each week. I certainly loved these sessions last time and will be joining in! Hope you enjoy these sessions, and try to get out for a walk each day if you can.
RE - to support the children in their religious education, don’t forget to check out Fr Jim’s website. Fr Jim posts all the Masses here and the Children’s Liturgy activities are lovely. https://www.olablackpool.org/
Health and wellbeing Resources - I know this is a tricky time for us all - the children included - so I though I would add this little pack of activities to help remind them that they are all wonderful an amazing people. I particularly like the balloons activity about the things that the children all really great at and the positivity jar - we made one of these at home during the lockdown and it really focuses the mind on all that is good in the world. Take a look and use what you like and think will work with your child. Resource pack
Support for Parents - this information pack has a few useful links to support reading - I added the ones I thought most relevant to Year 1 under the reading heading - but the video at the bottom and the checklist for the day may be useful if you are finding it difficult to get into a good routine for Home Learning. The video can be accessed through the link and is suitable for KS 1 children. take a look if you think you would find it useful. Support for parents during Cnvid-19 Lockdown
PLEASE SEND ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S WORK THROUGH THE PORTFOLIO SECTION OF CLASS DOJO. Any problems, please just email me.
year1@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk
Have a good week and I look forward to seeing your work. Please make sure you have sent examples of the children’s work to me by 12pm on a Friday so that I can comment on it by the end of the school day (which on Friday is 1.30pm) - or you can post each day if that is easier for you! (That actually really helps me to keep on top of it!) As this is our last week of Home Learning it is essential that you send me the children’s work before the end of the school day on FRIDAY 6TH MARCH - as I will not have time to go through it all after that as we are all back at school on MONDAY 8TH MARCH. Any work sent after the end of the school today on 6.3.21 will be approved, so it goes into the children’s portfolio as evidence of their work during lockdown, but it will not be commented on. Many thanks with your help with this - as always - Mrs Hollinghurst
Year 1 - be good, work hard and stay safe……Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins
