We had such an exciting week in Reception to celebrate Lunar New Year. We spent some time learning about the story of the Great Race - the way the Chinese Zodiac was created. We spoke about the animals and we also discussed which animal represented the year of our birth. The children absolutely loved dressing up in various Chinese clothing and they also enjoyed making spring rolls. I was so proud of the children as they ALL tried at least one bite once they were cooked! Some of the children ate every last drop!
Our Learning
Look at what we have been learning this week!
Phonics - we have recapped our Phase 1 and Phase 2 sounds and tricky words. The children now work in groups daily with myself or Mrs Debowksa to progress their reading skills. We hope you can see the progress they are making through their reading at home. Please continue to be patient and help your child to sound out the words as they work through the book.
Maths - this week the children have been ordering dragons by size. They also worked very hard on activities based on number bonds to 5.
Mark making - the children wrote the initial sounds for the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.
Fine motor skills - the children used chopsticks to put golden coins in lucky envelopes.
Super six - our guided reading book this week was Ruby’s Chinese New Year.
Expressive Art & Design - the children created their own Chinese Lanterns.
Understanding the world - we created a Chinese restaurant in our small world area.
Our theme next week is Transport.

Reading at home
Thank you so much for the support you are giving to your children to develop their reading skills at home. It is glorious to see how often the children are reading and to read your comments. You are making such a big difference! There is a small amount of children who do not appear to be reading at home at all. Please try to read with your child for at least 5 minutes a day. Not only is it a lovely experience but it is also greatly helping their progress. Thank you.
Notices
Teddy Bear Friday - I have told the children that if they wish to, they can bring in a small teddy bear on a Friday. This is due to the fact that some children were bringing in teddies from home on other days and I would rather limit this to just one day a week so that it doesn’t interfere with the children’s learning.
Earrings - please ensure that if your child wears earrings, that they are removed on PE days.
Please ensure your child’s uniform is labelled clearly with their name.
Headlice - we have had some more cases of headlice in Reception. Please check your child’s hair regularly and treat them if necessary. A good preventative is combing your child’s hair with a nit comb each time it is washed. We have arranged for the school nurse to put on some sessions for parents around headlice and prevention. Date TBC.
Phonics Information session - we are hoping to get a date to you this week as to when this will be. Hopefully within the first two weeks back after half term.
Thank you,
Miss Heim-Sarac, Mrs Debowska and Miss Murray
